Biography

Benjamin Phinney was born in Barnstable, Plymouth Colony on 18 June 1682, son of John and Mary (Rogers) Finney/Phinney.[1][2][3]

He married first to Martha Crocker on 30 June 1709 at Barnstable,[4] the daughter of Joseph and Temperance (Bursley) Crocker. She was born in Barnstable on 22 February 1689/90.[5] The division of her father's estate, dated 28 March 1728/9, names Martha and husband Benjamin Phinney.[6] Martha died in Barnstable before 19 September 1747 when her husband filed his intentions to marry again.[7]

Benjamin married, secondly, Elizabeth (Young) Ames on 5 November 1747 in Barnstable.[8] She was probably the widow of Zephon Ames of Provincetown, and the daughter of Benjamin and Sarah (Snow?) Young of Eastham.[3] Elizabeth died after 24 March 1758 when she was named in her husband's will.[9]

Benjamin died probably shortly before 19 July 1758 when his inventory was taken. Benjamin Phinney of Barnstable, yeoman, wrote his will on 24 March 1758 in which he gave his wife Elizabeth the improvement of half his estate during her widowhood; named sons Seth, daughter Temperance Fuller, daughter Melatiah, Susannah Dimock; five grandsons "descending of Barnabas & Zaccheus" Jehabod, Benjamin, Timothy, Barnabas, Zaccheus when age twenty one. Son Seth named as executor. His will was proved on 07 November 1758. In his inventory is a "note of hand on Thomas Ames for £27.01.10", and the estate totaled £204 including homestead, lands and personal estate, sworn to by Seth Phiney.[9]
