Translation of Text on Poster commemorating the suffragettes of Lueneburg-100 years since women got the vote in Germany. | Exhibit in Museum Lueneburg, November 2018
Betty Jacobsohn was one of the first bourgeois women on the Lueneburg City Council. She was an example of the women who were politically active at the time. In 1918, she was part of the 1918 newly founded German Democratic Party (DDP). In the picture of a leaflet about the elections you can see a female figure gesturing her hands over the people, symbolizing the DDP - The other German parties are portrayed as fat military men who are faced with a female figure who raises her protective hands over the people.
Betty Jacobsohn was one of the women campaigning for the DDP in Lüneburg. She is one of the women who made their mark in Lüneburg in 1914 for the DDP. Members of the Lueneburg local branch of the DDP came from civic circles, many were are the wives of merchants and manufacturers.
When Betty Jacobsohn initially ran for office, she was not immediately elected, but finally in 1922 she won as one of the first female members in the City Council. At that time she was already 63 years old.
From the Museum Lueneburg 2018 exhibit poster: Born on March 15, 1859, Betty was the oldest daughter of the banker, Marcus Heinemann. Marcus was one of the Jewish elite in Lüneburg. In 1877, she married Moritz Jacobsohn, who took over the banking business of WH Michaels. They had six children, three boys, and three girls. The well-off family lived in a large villa on Haagestrasse. Both shared a social commitment. Betty was involved in the board of the "Vaterländische Frauenverein" an organization that cared for women and children in difficult social circumstances. For children in need of rest, she founded a forest recreation center. She also sent supplies to people who were living on the refugee trains from the Baltic states. Moritz Jacobsohn was a member of the synagogue board and was instrumental in the construction of the synagogue in 1894, as well as treasurer of the Museum Association. He was co-founder of the volunteer fire department.
