About Emilie Heinemann

Emilie was also known as Mietze. After her mother died, she was the one who took close care of her father, while her sister, Martha raised the children. After his death, Emilie, Martha, and their brother Willy lived in the house on Grosse Baeckerstrasse 23 and Emilie cared for her older sister, Martha.

In 1935 and 36 (the year she died) Emilie wrote a memoir which we are currently translating. Meanwhile, here is a quote from it:

"The situation of the Jews in Germany is unfortunately very sad. Everything we do is made difficult. The families who considered Germany their home and respected it as their home have to leave, they have to go into strange countries so that their children can actually learn something. Aren't the Jews humans like everybody else, don't we all believe in one God? I have this wish that all these sad stories and all these sad experiences should not make the hearts of the Jews bitter. And I would wish that the dear God keeps our hearts pure and gives us the courage to enjoy God's work and his beautiful nature. The sad thing is that the times today, in these times, the kids are told that all Jews are bad people and of a lesser value and that getting in contact with them is bad, it's not good for you, but I hope that this view will change again. When our mother was very sick, she was in a room which faced to the street, and at that point on November 12, 1883, there was a big Martin Luther ceremony. Martin Luther had died approximately four hundred years earlier, so there was a big celebration. The Lord mayor of Lueneburg made sure that there was like a march. And they were supposed to march along the Baeckerstrasse but the Lord Mayor made sure that they went another way so that she (our mother) wasn't disturbed because she was dying."

"This was humanity and a sense of community that the Lord Mayor showed. One citizen for the other. I am very glad that the times today, that our parents didn't live to see what is going on today, that they were spared. God help us."
