In her memoir, Emilie, sister of Martha said after their mother's death, her father Marcus referred to Martha as "my angel." She explains, "Marcus called her my angel because she helped him and and she took care of the education and the upbringing of the children after Henrietta died. The little children said 'Why don't we say mama like all the other children?' So they never realized that they didn't have a mother because Martha was always there and they treated her like mother."
