Lewis M. Lawshe (age 24) first shows up in the 1850 Federal Census of Lafayette County, Mississippi. He is married to Mary J. (22). Their children are William S. (4) and Cherokee (2). Lewis was born in Georgia, his wife and children in Mississipi. Mary J. is the first of three wives. She would die in 1858 as would their daughter Victoria. They are buried in Shipp Cemetery.

  • *************************************** Lewis M. next turns up in the 1860 Federal Census of Lafayette County (Post Office-Paris) He is now married to Elizabeth and William S. (12) and Cherokee (10) also there, along with the new additions of Jeffie (8) and Louis (6). All the children are from first wife Mary J. The following marriage record is found for L. M. and Elizabeth: Ancestry.com Mississippi Marriages, 1826-1900 Name: L. M. LAWSHE Spouse: E. J. BANKHEAD Marriage Date: 24 Aug 1859 County: Yalobusha State: MS
    • ************************************** Somehow Lewis managed to avoid the 1870 Census and next shows up again in the 1880 Federal Census of Water Valley, Yalobusha, Mississippi. He is a 54 year old Deputy Sheriff, and his (third) wife is listed as Mary P. (age 42) so according to the marriage record listed below, she would be Mary P. Harvey.

--------------------------------
Mississippi Marriages, 1776-1935 Name: Mary P. Harvey Spouse: Capt. L. M. Lawshe Marriage Date: 24 Nov 1868 County: Yalobusha
--------------------------------
He is listed as "Captain" in his marriage record so he was most likely a Confederate officer during the Civil War. L. M. and Mary have 9 children, ranging from age 1 to 26. From the children's ages it can be determined that of the 9 children only Ida Lu (1), Joseph H. (5), Thos. G. (8) and Benj. H. (10) are children of Mary P. Harvey Lawshe. Leana (18), Mary (16) and Maud (14) are from the marriage to Elizabeth Bankhead. Mary P. Harvey turns up in the 1860 Census living in the SW Beat of Yalobusha County. However it seems that L. M. is her second husband as she is married to W. H. Harvey and they have a one year old son, James H. Harvey. Is Mary P. Harvey the former Mary Greenhaw? The following marriage record indicates she could be. The timeline is correct and the middle initial variance could be due to handwriting interpretation.
--------------------------------
Mississippi Marriages, 1776-1935 Name: William H. Harvey Spouse: Mary R. Greenhaw Marriage Date: 5 Jan 1857 County: Yalobusha
--------------------------------
When L. M. died in 1888 his second wife Mary P. (Greenhaw?) Lawshe would have been 50 years old so she could have married a third time and moved on. The whereabouts of L. M.'s second wife, Elizabeth, has not yet been determined. D. G. D. Jan. 2008)
