1817 Georgia Journal :
"One fractional survey of land, known by the #115 in the 7th District Baldwin when
surveyed, Now Twiggs County; levied on to satisfy an esc??? ub favir if tge /state of
Georgia against: Christopher Collins, Christopher Dyess & John Keener."
Christopher Dyess was born in 1777 in South Carolina and it is believed
the County was Barnwell. Too young to fight in the Revolutionary War he
grew into manhood hearing, I'm sure, stories from his brothers, Henry,
John and William about the War. Soon after manhood, Christopher married
and had one child before moving on to Georgia to joining brothers Thomas
and George. The name of his first wife was possibly Martha Collins. I
say this for five reasons. First, Christopher was dismissed from the
Stone Creek Baptist Church in 1810 along with a Joshua Collins.
Secondly, in Wayne County, Christopher Dyess can be found on the 1812
tax records with a Christopher Collins. On the 1814 tax records,
Christopher can be found with a Joshua Collins. Thirdly, there was a
court case in Wayne County which I found which supports my theory. In
this court case a Christopher Collins and wife, Racheal Hendricks
Collins, filed suit against the estate of John William Hendricks. This
was Racheal's father. In this court case various Collins were named and
the names are very similar to that of Christopher's children and
grandchildren. These names were: Christopher and Racheal Collins with
children Christopher Jr., Ely, Henrdicks, Benjamin, James, Joshua,
Robert, and Joseph. Also named in this case was a Jacob Collins and
wife Lucy with children Jacob Jr., Mary, Ann, Elizabeth, Racheal,
Louisa, Lucy, and Martha. In addition, Joshua Collins and wife Mary
with children, Joshua Jr., Martha, Elizabeth, James, and Nancy were
named. These Collins men, Christopher, Joshua, Jocob were probably
brothers. Fourthly, their were Collins in Barnwell County, South
Carolina where Christopher orginates from. Lastly, two children of
Christopher named thier daughter Martha. John and Emily Dyess named
their first born daughter Martha. George and Mary named a daughter
Martha. These children were adults when their father, Christopher Dyess
married Martha Cooper. I feel it highly unlikely that they would have
named their children after a step mother they never lived with. Also,
with Martha being a common name in this time, it is highly likely that
both wives were named Martha. I highly suspect that Martha Collins was
the first wife of Christopher Dyess and until further proof can be shown
I will show that Martha Collins was this first wife. We do, however,
know that the two married around 1798 or 1799 in South Carolina based on
birth of thier children. Christopher then took his young family and
settled in Twigg County, Georgia. Christopher was a member of the Stone
Creek Baptist Church in 1809 along with a Joshua Collins. Proof of this
comes from old church records. He was accepted into the church on March
3rd 1809 and he was dismissed in 1810, the same time Joshua Collins was
dismissed. Christopher was accepted into the Stone Creek Baptist church
by letter. So it is believed that he was a member of a Baptist church
in South Carolina but records of this period are difficult at best to
find. Christopher received a passport in October 1810 from Georgia soon
after his nephew, Dempsey Dyess, did to travel west through the Indian
land. Passport were required because Indians were fearful that the
travelers were coming to take their land and the passports were to
assure the travelers safe passage. Christopher only obtained a passport
for himself. So It is believed that he left his wife and then four
small children (John, Mary, George, and Joshua) behind in order to go
west and establish a residence. He settled in Wayne County, Mississippi
and it is believed that
he returned to Georgia prior to 1820 for a short period to get his wife
and children. Christopher owned considerable land in Wayne County as
proved by land patents and tax records from 1812 to 1818. Christopher
then moved to Lawrence County, Mississippi in 1820 were he is found in
the census with a wife, three sons, and three daughters. He owned at
one time 480 acres in Silver Creek area of Lawrence County. This can be
proven in tax records of Lawrence County from 1820 to 1831.
Christopher's first wife, Martha, must have died sometimes around 1821,
probably in childbirth, but before 1825. This can be proven by a birth
of a child in 1821 (Thomas) as well as a marriage bond in 1826 of
Christopher Dyess to a Martha Patsey Thames Cooper. The two were married
soon after all of Christopher's children from his first marriage were
married in Lawrence County. After Christopher and Martha Patsey'
marriage they continued to live in Lawrence County until 1834 when they
moved first to Jasper County. In 1836 Christopher bought land in Newton
County and in 1828 he bought land in Lauderdale County. The land patents
state Christopher was from Clark County. These counties Jasper, Newton,
Lauderdale, and Clark are all connected and it is believed that he may
have lived at the junture of these four counties. Christopher last shows
up in in 1850 on the Clark County census at the age of 73 from South
Carolina. His wife was listed as Sara. But this is an error with the
census taker because 1852 probate records of Christopher Dyess show
Martha Patsey Thames Cooper Dyess as his widow. Probate records in 1852
show a Thomas Dyess as the administrator of Christopher's Dyess' estate.
Thomas would be the male child born in 1821 by his first wife, Martha.
At the time of Christopher's death all his other children had already
moved westward to Louisiana and Texas and none were named in the estate.
However, a Collin Dyess was named. It seems Collin had taken off a
negro slave. Again, note the name Collin Dyess. He was son of John and
Emily Dyess who was the son of Christopher Dyess. Thomas must have been
the only child who remained close to his father and lived near him in
Clark County and therefore he took care of the estate. Christopher died
pennyless.
