GEDCOM Note

0John Dyess first shows up in the courts in 1782 in Barnwell County,
South Carolina where he and his brother Henry bought some land on Upper
Three Runs near the Savanah River (Deed Bk 1 Page 119). Then in 1784
Henry sold it to John Dyess before leaving for Georgia (Deed Bk 1 Page
117). John Dyess fought in the Revolutionary War under the command of
Captain Joseph Johnson from 04-02-1781 to 12-12-1781, (SC- AA:2120).

John received a Headright Land Grant. Copy of plot in then Franklin Co. GA.
(then Franklin Co. now probably Clark Co.) indacates 287ac bounded on the west
side of the land by "college land" (Univ. of GA.?) on the north by Cobb Creek.

John first married the daughter of John and Sabra Green. This is proven
by a land deed in Barnwell County where the heirs of John Green sold
land to a Needham Green (Barnwell County Deed Bk D Page 354 dated
02-25-1797) also reference is made on page 441. John Dyess is listed as one of
the heirs. John's 1st daughter was named Sabra this would also indicate that
John married a lady who's last name was Green.
The Green lady must have died because she is not listed
as an heir. Her first name is unknown. John soon moved on to Tatnall
County, Georgia probably following brother Henry. John purchased land
on the waters of Little Charoche River. John Dyess owned land in
Liberty and Tatnall County. In other words, he owned land on both sides
of the River. John soon remarried to a Lucy Twigg. Several other
children were born to this marriage. John, after moving to Georgia,
received draws in the Georgia Land Lotteries of 1803, 1804, 1806, 1815,
1819, 1820, and 1823. John Dyess died around 1826 or 1827. There is some
confusion as to the death date. But after researching the Liberty
County records it was found that John probably died around 1826 or 1827
and most probably left all he owned to Lucy to be divided at her death.
Lucy Dyess made annual returns on John Dyess' estate from the 1820's to
the early 1850's. The executor for the John who died in 1827 and the
estate in 1854 after Lucy died are two different people. The executor in
1827 must have died or moved on and another one was appointed. But we
can assume it is the same John because the land sold at the estate sale
in 1852 was the same land owned by John in the early 1800's. Lucy must
have died in 1852 and the land was divided among John's children and
grandchildren. The people named in the estate were: John Murray,
Sabria Murray, John Dyess, Violator Weathers and Benjamin Weathers,
Wiley L. Underwood, and George A. Dyess, (Minutes of the Ordinary Court,
April 1853 to May 1857: Tatnall, County Ga). Nothing more is known about
John Dyess accept that he did own in his lifetime considerable land in
the Liberty and Tatnall County, Georgia area.
