Known children of William and Elizabeth (may be others):

Sally Dyess - born abt. 1784 in Barnwell, South Carolina. Information found shows husband as James Bentley. Will was found on James Bentley dated 05/02/1853 Barnwell, South Carolina. It lists a wife as Sally and only notated his 3 youngest children. Eliza b. Abt. 1804, Francis b. Abt. 1805 and Alexander b. Abt. 1807 all in Barnwell, South Carolina

John Dyess - born Abt. 1787 Barnwell, South Carolina. Married 04/29/1814 in Mobile, Alabama to a Kitty Kline b. 1795

William Dyess - born Abt. 1790 Barnwell, South Carolina. Married 12/25/1811 Jones, Georgia to Elizabeth Tempe Cockran

Mary Dyess - born Abt. 1796 Barnwell, South Carolina. This is where things get confusing with her. Some trees have a James Bentley listed as her husband. This is also the name of Sister Sally's husband. Either there were 2 James Bentley's that married the sisters or 1 sister isn't a sister. We know from Sally's James Bentley that she is listed as spouse in will and he specifically States that Her children Eliza, Francis and Alexander are his Youngest children. If their birth dates are in the vicinity of being right. The children Listed for Mary and James Bentley proves that these aren't the same men. Children Listed for Mary and James are: Brian Bentley b. Abt. 1815 and Almena or Allie Mae Bentley b. Abt. 1823 and d. 1897

Joshua Dyess - born abt. 1795 Barnwell, South Carolina. Married 05/13/1826 Lawrence, Mississippi to Selena Hambrick 1810-1864

Thomas Dyess - born abt. 1798 Barnwell, South Carolina. Often mixed up with cousin Thomas Dyess who married Nancy Jenkins. He may not even be a child of William at all.

GEDCOM Note

William Dyess is believed to have been born around 1765 in Barnwell
County, South Carolina. We know that William married Elizabeth "Betsey"
Everritt because in 1788 William was left land and was appointed joint
executor in William Everritt's Will, The father of Betsey. William
Dyess fought in the Revolutionary War
under Captain Joseph Johnson and John Sapp (SC- AA-2123). He fought
along with John and Henry Dyess his brothers. After the war William
Dyess was granted 300 acres in the then called Orangeburg District in
South Carolina on the Crackers Neck Waters of Savanah River in 1784 for
services rendered during the war. William Dyess died in 1800 in Barnwell
County, South Carolina. This can be proven by Letters of Administration
filed by his widow, Betsey Everritt Dyess, in Barnwell County (November
5, 1800). William Dyess died interstate with no will and Betsey filed
these papers in order to settle the estate. In these papers it states
"William Dyess late of the District and State aforesaid, planter
deceased". This action was signed by Elizabeth Dyess and Thomas Everritt
(her brother). These papers were filed and no further action was taken.
Therefore, it is assumed that the entire estate was left to Betsey his
wife and their children. Several land transaction took place in Barnwell
County, South Carolina, after William's death. They were: 1. Elizabeth,
Mary, Martin to Josiah Boyet; "50 acres owned by William Dyess" (Bk L Pg
439- dated 11-2-1819); 2. Elizabeth Dyess and Dempsey Dyess to John
Reynolds (Bk B Pg 131- dated 4-2-1805); 3. Dempsey Dyess to Wright
Welch; "375 acre tract of land which my father, William Dyess possessed
and now owned by my mother Betey Dyess" (Bk E Pg 206- dated 11-6-1810);
4. William Dyess to Betsey Dyess; "375 acres all of my interest or claim
to tract of land of which my father William Dyess possessed" (Bk H Pg
270- dated 11-7-1814); 5. John Dyess to Josiah Boyet; "80 acres which is
my portion of a tract of land as one of the heirs of William Dyess" (Bk
S Pg 159- dated 3-8-1832). After William's death Betsey Dyess took up
with Josiah Boyet also of Barnwell County, South Carolina. Josiah had
left his wife after he had discovered his wife had been unfaithful to
him. Josiah was the brother of Winnifred Boyet Dyess, wife of Henry
Dyess. Josiah and Betsey never legally married but they had several
children all of which were given the Dyess last name. One of the
children was Lud Arnold Dyess. This can be proven by court records in
Barnwell County, South Carolina. In this court record Josiah's children
from a previous marriage were contesting the fact that Josiah had sold
land to his son Lud Arnold Dyess. Several people testified that Lud
Arnold was the child of Josiah and Betsey Elizabeth Dyess and that the
two were never married. The children from this first marriage must have
felt cheated after Josiah died and thus took Lud Arnold to court to get
their rightful share. The estate in question was 50 acres of land that
Josiah had sold to Lud Arnold earlier before his death. Lud Arnold took
care of his dad before his death and Josiah must have sold him the land
because he loved his son. The judge in the trial ruled that the 50
acres be divided and one fourth went to Josiah and the other three
fourths to go to the Raysor children. Lud, upset since he had legally
bought the land earlier appealed the ruling. However, Lud Arnold
dropped the appeal because the case was dismissed in the February Term
in 1855. Betsey died sometimes soon after the death of Josiah Boyet.
