Thomas Dyess first shows up in Barnwell County, South Carolina on
February 5, 1789 as witnessing a will of William Everritt. This William
Everritt was the father-in-law of William Dyess who was the brother of
Thomas. William Dyess had married a Elizabeth Betsey Everritt. Some have
said that Thomas was not born till later. However, for Thomas to have
witnessed this will he would have to be at least 21 years of age. That
would put him being born (if you use the date of this will in 1789 and
subtract 21 years) prior to 1768. Thomas married a Mary Green in 1797
or 1798 in Barnwell County. No one had been able to prove who this Mary
was. But, after researching the Barnwell County records, it was found
that she was probably a Green, daughter of John and Sabra Green. This
would also be the same John and Sabra Green that was the father-in-law
and mother-in-law of John Dyess who was a brother of Thomas. Thomas
Dyess named a son Aquiller Dyess after Aquiller Green, brother of Mary
Green. Thomas Dyess also had several grandchildren named after the Green
side such as: Joseph Green Dyess (son of Aquiller Dyess), Aquiller James
Dyess (son of William Dyess), and Aquiller Green Dyess (son of Thomas
Dyess). Mary Green was listed as an heir of John Green in 1794 along
with Thomas' brother, John Dyess. She was not married at that time.
Thomas and Mary Green married after that as proved by birth of first
born child Aquiller Dyess in 1799. After he married Mary Green he and
his family first moved to Tatnall County before moving to Wilkinson
County, Georgia. No family records had found Thomas in Tatnall County.
But after researching the Tatnall County Courthouse it was found that
indeed Thomas was there as proved by a Court Book, Marks, Brands, and
Estrays, in the Court of Ordinary, recorded May 5, 1806. Here Thomas
went to court to establish his brand for his cattle. It states, "The
mark and brand of Thomas Dias is a swallow fork in one ear and upper
figure a seven in the other branded thus TD".
Thomas also drew in the
Land Lotteries of Georgia in 1805 in Tatnall County as well as serving
as a juror in the Tatnall County courts in 1808, 1807, 1808, 1809, and
1810. Then in 1820, Thomas can be found in the Wilkinson County area. So
it is believed that Thomas and Mary moved first to Tatnall following
brother John and Henry Dyess and after living there a time moved up to
Wilkinson County and then on to Monroe County where he died after 1830.
After Thomas Dyess moved to Monroe County there was a land deed (Monroe
County Bk T Pg 186-188) where it states Liberty County, Georgia Thomas
Dyess bought land. The witness to this purchase was John Dyess. This
has to be the same John Dyess Sr, who fought in the Revolutionary War
because his mark was the same as it was in Barnwell County, South
Carolina and in Tatnall County Georgia. Thomas Dyess' will is dated July
21, 1826 in Monroe County and in 1830 Thomas was still on the Cences but
shows up no longer after 1830. Thomas' children moved from Monroe
County, to Stewart County, to Henry County, Alabama then on to
Mississippi before finally settling Texas. Nothing more is known about
Thomas Dyess.
May 8, 1822 Thomas Dyess purchases land in Monroe Co. Ga. from John M. Dregar,
first owner of land in Monroe Co. GA (District 12; Lot 173). Deed Book A;
Monroe Co. GA. page 329.
