Passenger on the "Abigail" of London, Richard Hackwell, Master. Sailed from Plymouth August 1635; arrived in Boston about October 1635. Listed as passengers are Christopher age 32, Mrs. Frances Foster, 25; Rebecca 5; Nathaniel 2; Joseph 1. Also with them were Alice Stevens 22 (may have been Mrs. Foster's sister) and Thomas Stevens 12. Christopher is listed as 'husbandman of Ewell, county Surrey.

CHRISTOPHER FOSTER, b 1603; d 1687; styled on the shipping list as a farmer, the founder of this branch of the American family with wife Frances and three children, came from Surrey, England, embarked in London 17th June 1635, in the ship "Abigail", Captain Robert Hackwell; was probably first in Boston, where he was made Freeman 17th April 1637. In the sam year we find him in Lynn, where in 1638 sixty acres of land were allotted him. In 1651 he removed to Southampton, Long Island; m. in England, Frances Stevens, dau. of Alice Stevens, of Ewell in Surry, England."

The Southhampton Historical Society rep. said that Christopher was probably buried in the South Burying Ground on Little Plains Road. The oldest cemetery in Southhampton. The only record they have is of Daniel b. 1676 d. 1744 son of Jospeh Foster, son of Christoper is buried there and that his stone remains. It is overgrown apparently. e-mail from Anna Peters

Christopher Foster was born in July 1603 [Ewell, Surrey, England]. He married there 24 Dec 1628 Frances Stevens, born 1 July 1610 daughter of Alice Stevens [will 1645] of Ewell in Surrey, England. "Frances Stevens was the daughter of Jerome (Church Warden) and Alice Stevens." The Southhampton Historical Society 

"If Christopher Foster was born in the parish of Ewell, Surrey in 1603, I regret that there is no way of confirming this as the parish records (which we hold here), only start at 1604.

However, I have checked the transcripts to these records for the period immediately after 1604 and again from 1624 to 1635 and have found the following entries:

-1628 'Chrystopher ffoster and ffrancis Steven were maryed one the foure and twentye daye of December 1628.'

-1630 'Rebecka ffoster the daughter of Christopher ffoster was baptized the vth daye of Marche.'

-1632 'Nathaniel ffoster the sonne of Christopher ffoster was baptized the fourthe daye of Maye.'

-1634 'Johanes filius Christopherij ffoster Baptizatus erat Ocatauo die Maij.'

Freeman Edmond II - baptized 25 Jul 1596, died at age 86, body was

interred at Old Town Cemetery, in Sandwich Plymouth colony. Will on

21 Jun 1682 in Sandwich, Inventory of estate in Sandwich taken on

4 Oct 1682, amount unknown, probated 2 Nov 1682. He married first

Bennett Hodsoll in 1617, who died in England in 1630 and then he

married Elizabeth Perry in 1632. She is on this voyage. Edmond III

and Alice on this voyage are both children of Edmond II and Bennett.

Freeman, Edmond III(aka Edmund/Edward)- died between 4 Mar 1696 and

5 Jan 1704 in Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA Christened 26 Nov 1620 in

Billingshurst, Sussex, Eng. Resided in Shawme (now Sandwich) after

3 Apr 1637.

Plymouth records, 3 Apr 1637, is thus granted permission to settle

Sandwich, the fourth town in the Plymouth Colony: "It is also agreed

by the Court that these ten men of Saugus, Edmund Freeman, Henry Feake,

Thomas Dexter, Edward Dillingham, William Wood, John Carman, Richard

Chadwell, William Almy, Thomas Tupper and George Knott shall have

liberty to view a place and sit down and have sufficient lands for

three score families upon the conditions propounded to them by the

Governor and Mr. Winslow." Edmund was the deputy to the General Court

from Sandwich. Edmond married 1648 1st to Rebecca Prence,

daughter of Gov. Thomas Prence of Plymouth Colony and granddaughter of

William Brewster, patriarch of Mayflower 1620 voyage and 2nd in 1651 to

Margaret Perry.

Administration of estate in Sandwich 5 Jan 1703/4 at court unknown.

My ancestor John Ruckman his wife Elizabeth and their 9 month old son

also named John came to Boston, MA aboard the Abigail 8 October 1635.

He was a follower of Lady Deborah Moody the anabaptist and was given a

town lot and a plantation lot in her settlement at Gravesend, Long

Island, New Netherlands (New York). He soon sold the plantation lot.

John later settled in Sandwich, Barnstable Co.,MA. Lady Moody was a

witness to John's will dated 13 March 1650. Brenda DeMarce

My 8-GGrandfather (Ralph Shepherd age: 29), and his wife (Thanks or I've

been given "Thanks Lord", Puritans?) age: 23, and their daughter: Sarah

age: 3 were aboard the "Abigail". Ralph lived until 1693, outliving

one of his sons who was killed in King Phillips war in the late 1600's.

I would like to hear from anyone else who is decended from Ralph!

I am a descendant of George Drewrie, who was in fact Hugh Drury of Sudbury,

MA and later Boston.

I am interested in John Freeman (not related to Edmond) as he traveled with

George and is found in Sudbury records with Hugh. Court records show that

Hugh's birth date and George's overlap. It was the genealogist C.E. Banks

(a Hugh Drury descendant) that stated George Drewrie is from East Grinstead,

but now that birth records are available for the parish, it is clear he is

not.

My own research on the lives of the immigrants of the Abigail suggest that

John Freeman, age 30, was from Bocking, ENG. Marie, aged 50 in Hotten, is

found in the Bocking birth records as Maria Freman, daughter of Roberti.

Also Edmond Manning (Hotten's spelling) is found in the Bocking register as

Edmundi Maninge. Again it was Banks who placed him in Denge, which is where

he returned to ENG and died.

My ancestor Hugh Drurys first appearance in Sudbury Records is when he took

possession of a home after William Swift, originally of Bocking, defaulted

on a mortgage of 3 pounds. John Freeman was the witness to the taking of

possession. Swift had gone to Sandwich (interesting Freeman overlap),

I am a descendant of William Potter and his wife Frances who came to America

on the ship Abigail October 8,1635. William Potter died June 1662 New Haven.

I've yet to discover when Frances died. They had 5 children, all born in

America ... Joseph who married Phoebe Ives, Mary who married Joseph Mansfield,

Sarah who married Robert Foote, Hope who married Danile Robinson and Rebecca

who married Thomas Adams.

I descend from their daughter Sarah and Robert Foote, whose daughter

Sarah married Isaac Curtis. I would enjoy communicating with anyone

researching this family and am always glad to help whenever I can.

The McClearn's (Ulster-Scots) came from Ulster, Ireland in 1761 beginning with

James and Isabell....information sent via the Thomas Randall Research Centre in

Queens County, Nova Scotia refers to McClearn descendants that the name was

originally McLAREN....in NS records it has been spelled McLARN, McLARREN,

Christopher came from London, England in the "Abigail," June 17, 1635 ae, thrirty-two, with his wife, Frances, ae. twenty-five, and children, Rebecca, five, Nathaniel, two, and John, one. They were part of the Puritan migration and Hugh Peters, later Cromwell's chaplain, was on the same ship and helped form the church congregation to which Christopher belonged. He first came to Boston, where he was a Freemen on 17 April 1637. In 1638 he moved to Lynn, Massachusetts. In 1647, he went to Hempstead and then to Southampton in 1650, both in New York. In October of 1650, we find him as a townsman or selectmen to manage the affairs of the town, being one of the 41 proprietors.

History: Christopher Foster is the son of Sir Knight Thomas Foster (Forster). He changed his name because he married a close cousin named Susanna Forster. They had the same Great Great Great Grandfather. This family tree goes back to Sir Knight John Forster and Sir Knight Richard Forster. Sir John rode with King Richard I the Lion Heart to Palestine in the late 1100's. This family was given the Bamburg Castle by Queen Elizabeth I. The family went bankrupt in the 1700 or 1800's and sold the castle to the Armstrong family of England which is where the castle is located. The Forster family came to England in the 1000 AD time to escape the Saxon invasion into Flanders. The Forster family changed from Forester (The Family were the Counts of Flanders) and evolved from the de Forrester of Belgium. The de Forrester family wasby record of the Prince of Dijon, Beljium in 740 AD. The Counts of Flanders, Anacher The Great Forester, Balwin I through the V, Arnulf Forester had marriages to Princess of France, Princess of Luxemboroug, etc. One of the Baldwin's daughters married William the Conquer. Her name was Matilda.

Christopher died OCT 1687, Hempstead, Suffolk, NY. came from London, England on the ship "Abigail" ( June 17, 1635) with his wife and three children (Rebecca, Nathaniel, John). By 1638 family was in Lynn MA (admitted freeman in 1637 and lived on Nahant Street), but moved about 1642 to Southampton, Long Island, and finally to Hempstead. There were also a Thomas, William, and John Foster in Hempstead, LI, when Christopher moved there. They possibly were brothers of Christopher, although no evidence exists. Age 32 on arrival, per Winthrop Society.

He came to America in 1635, on the ship "Abigail". As Frances Stevens married Christopher Foster in 1628 and her first children were born 1630, 1632 and 1634 in Ewell, Surrey, George could not have been her son, but might have been the son of Christopher’s first wife. G N Mackenzie also says George born in England and came to America in 1634, being entrusted to Dr Samuel Fuller.
