About Corporal Enoch William Maxwell, (USA)

G.A.R.

Son of John Maxwell and Mahala Weddle Maxwell.

Enoch served, along with his father and 3 of his brothers, in the Union Army. He enlisted 1 August 1862 at Medora, Indiana in Company A, 50th Indiana Volunteer Infantry for a term of 3 years. He mustered in at Bowling Green, Kentucky on 10 August 1862. Fought in several battles, including the Battles of Saline River, the siege of Moline, Whistler Station, and Spoonville. He was badly injured on 15 September 1863 at Little Rock, Arkansas when soldiers loading potatoes on a boat accidentally let a sack of them fall from the river bank which landed on Enoch's back. He was subsequently in the Regiment Hospital through to September, and then later transferred to the hospital at Montgomery, Alabama. Returned to duty as a cook in October 1864. Mustered out 8 June 1865 at Montgomery Alabama as a Corporal.

Returned home to Indiana and became a dealer in hay as well as a grocery store proprietor. He was a Methodist and a Democrat. He was married four (separate) times, and between those wives had 16 children.

The 1850 Census of Jackson Co. Indiana, Salt Creek twnshp, pgs 122 & 123, dated 3 Sept 1850 lists Enoch W. as being 9 years old at the time of the census. His birthplace is listed as Indiana.

The 1860 Census of Jackson Co. Indiana, Carr twnshp, pg 477, dated 12 July 1860 lists E.W. Maxwell as being 20 years old at the time of the census. His occupation is listed as "farmer". The value of his personal property is listed as $400. It is indicated that he was married within the census year.

The Index of Civil War veterans (Union Army) at the Regional Branch of the National Archives in Laguna Niguel CA lists Enoch as having served in the 50th Indiana Infantry Co B.,d (or A) and the 52nd Indiana Infantry Co A. He is listed as Pvt/Pvt.

The Civil War muster record obtained from the Indiana State Archives indicates that Enoch enrolled as a recruit in Co B of the 50th Indiana Infantry on 1 August 1862 in Medora Indiana. His enlistment time was listed as 3 years. He was mustered on 10 August 1862 at Bowling Green KY. He listed his age as 22 at the time of his enrollment. His eyes were listed as hazel, his hair black, his height as 6' 1/2", his complexion as dark. His nativity was listed as Jackson Co Indiana, and his occupation as farmer. It is listed that he subsequently transferred to the 50th Res. Bn. (batallion?).

A subsequent muster record (probably recording his transfer out of Co B) indicates that Enoch was transferred into the 50th Indiana infantry Co A Res. Bn. His eyes were listed as blue, hair dark, height as 5'11", and his complexion fair.

Another muster record indicates that Enoch was transferred from the 50th into the 52nd, Co A. (Re-Organized).
