Samuel Chipman, second son of Samuel Chipman (2), was born Aug. 6, 1689; died 1753. He lived in Barnstable, Mass., successor to his father's estate, business and offices. His time and himself are illustrated, not only by his wearing garments the buttons on which were dollars and smaller coins, but by such exponents of wealth and position as a "negro boy" sold to him in 1728 by the executors of the estate of a late neighbor, and an "Indian Squa" assigned to him in 1749 to serve him "Three Years and Four Months" because she had stolen from him "On the Lords day the ninth of July Currant and On last Lords day Six Quarts of Rhum of Value Thirteen Shillings and Fou Pence." Having joined the church about 1720 he was chosen deacon Aug. 19, 1725. He married, first, Dec. 8, 1715, Abiah, daughter of John Hinkley, Jr., born March 24, 1696; died July 15, 1736; second, May 31, 1739, Mary, widow of Green. Samuel Chipman had by his first marriage six sons and two daughters, one son by the latter, —
