Biography
Ebenezer was probably born in Duxbury about 1672-3, (from his age at death) the son of Alexander and Sarah (Alden) Standish. [1][2] He was named in his father's will dated 21 February 1702 and proved 10 August 1702.[3][4]
He married Hannah Sturtevant about 1697 (before birth of first child in October 1698). She was the daughter of Samuel and Mercy (--?--) Sturtevant, born about 1680 based on her age at death. The will of Samuel Sturtevant of Halifax named his daughter Hannah Standish. His will was dated 18 March 1735/36 and proved on 21 May 1736 in Plymouth.[5] She died in Plympton on 23 January 1759 in her 80th year.[6]
Ebenezer Standish of Plympton, yeoman, sold to his son Zachariah Standish of Plympton, husbandman, his homestead in Plympton on 11 Oct 1720. Ebenezer reserved the right for himself and his wife Hannah to live there during their lifetimes.[7] Zachariah was married two days later.[8]
He died on 19 March 1755 in Plympton in his 83rd year,[6] and was buried at Hillcrest Cemetery, Plympton, Plymouth County, Province of Massachusetts Bay.[9][2]
No probate records have been found for Ebenezer or his wife.
The children of Ebenezer and Hannah (Sturtevant) Standish were recorded in Plympton, the first four born in Plymouth:[6]
Zachariah Standish, b. 12 Oct 1698, Plymouth.
Moses Standish, b. 30 August 1701, Plymouth.
Hannah Standish, b. 06 Mar 1703/4, Plymouth.
Zerviah Standish, b. 08 Jan 1706/7, Plymouth.
Sarah Standish, b. 09 Nov 1709, Plympton; d. 25 Aug 1792, Plympton; mar. Jabez Newland 1728 Plympton.
Mercy Standish, b. 17 Oct 1716, Plympton; d. 22 Feb 1794; m. (1) Unknown, (2) Benjamin Weston
Research Notes
The History of Duxbury, written in 1849,[10] contains errors. It incorrectly gives his death date as 1734 and names a grandson, Ebenezer, as his son.
In 1895, Myles Standish wrote The Standishes in America,[11] and repeated the error of "son" Ebenezer.
