Elizabeth Martiau was probably the daughter of Nicholas Martiau and Jane Berkeley.[1] She was probably born in either 1615 or 1625. There has been a question due to mistakes made to her head stone, when it was re-cut in 1931 (head stone says born in 1625, and 71 years old, but will was probated in 1686, so the numbers do not "add up").[2]

There is also a question about 1) how many times her father married, and 2) when he married. Add this to the uncertainty about Elizabeth's birth date, and researcher Douglas Richardson contends that Elizabeth's mother was not Jane Berkeley, but an "unknown 1st wife of Capt. Nicholas Martiau."

Elizabeth Martiau married Col George Reade in 1641 at Yorktown, York County, Virginia.[1] He was the son of Robert Reade and lady Mildred Windebank.[1]

Researchers disagree about the children of Col. George Reade and Elizabeth Martiau. According to du Bellet in Some Prominent Virginia Families, and also Richardson in Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial and Medieval Families, there were seven children: five sons, George, Robert, Thomas, Francis, Benjamin, and two daughters, Mildred (Reade) Warner and Elizabeth (Reade) Cheesman.[3][5] Van horn of the Nicolas Martiau Descendant Association agrees, identifying both George and Elizabeth as children.[6] According to McAllister, George and Elizabeth had five children, four sons: Robert, Francis, Benjamin and Thomas,[7] and one daughter, Mildred (Reade) Warner.[8]

The oldest child was daughter, Mildred Reade, married Col Augustine Warner Jr., of Warner Hall, and the daughter of this marriage, Mildred Warner, married Lawrence Washington, the grandfather of George Washington."[9] Robert was the oldest son of Col. George and Elizabeth (Martiau) Reade.[10]

Adventurers of Purse and Person 1607 - 1624/5 and Their Families" published by the Order of First Families of Virginia, indicates in a footnote (pp. 419-420) the discrepancy between the dates inscribed on his Grace Church tablets and the filing of the wills for George Read and his wife Elizabeth as follows: "His and his wife's gravestones were discovered during street excavations in Yorktown in 1931. The inscriptions on both were recut with errors. George Reade's stone now states he died Oct. 1674, "he being in the 66th yr of his age." Since the date should be 1671 (per his will), either the age shown, or his year of birth, is in error as well....The gravestone of Elizabeth (Martiau) Read now states she was born in 1625 and died in 1696, "being in ye 71st yeare of her age." Since the year of death should be 1686 (per her will), again the age or year of birth is in error. Since Nicholas Martiau claimed...his daughter Elizabeth as headrights...it would appear Elizabeth was born prior to his arrival in Virginia in 1620...and that Elizabeth's birth occurred in 1615 rather than 1625."

Death and Legacy

Elizabeth's will was written February 10, 1685/6 and signed and witnessed January 24 1686/87 in Yorktown, York County, Virginia.[11]

The assumption that she died when the will was witnessed is a mistake. Her gravestone is actually correct, saying she died in 1696.

Elizabeth was born on December 12th, 1625 in Elizabeth City, Virginia. Elizabeth's father was Captain Nicholas Martiau and her mother was Jane. She was an only child. She died at the age of 61 in 1686 in Yorktown, Virginia. She was buried in Yorktown, Virginia.

The will of Elizabeth (Martiau) Reade was dated February 10, 1685. Among other bequests is one reading: "I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Mildred Warner the mourning Ring I usually ware". The will names as living children Robert Reade, Francis Reade, Benjamin Reade and Thomas Reade (these last two sons being under age), Elizabeth Chrisman (herself the mother of daughters Elizabeth and Mildred), Mary Reade, Mildred Warner, and a deceased son George Reade; and there is mention also of Thomas Chisman, husband of Elizabeth (Reade) Chrisman beforementioned.

Elizabeth and George were married in 1641 in Yorktown, Virginia. They had a son and a daughter, named Francis and Mildred.

Yes, the READES were related to George, and my DAR ancestor, Capt George Weedon GRAY served directly under Gen. Washington. They crossed the Delaware together, with GRAY's cousin & Lt, James MONROE, who later became President. GRAY and MONROE became almost destitute before the Revolution was over, GRAY having invested over $85,000 into the war. MONROE was so poor that he had to live with George and his wife Mildred Rootes Thompson, until he could get on his feet financially again. Makes me wonder if anyone would be that patriotic in these days. Mildred Rootes THOMPSON and George WASHINGTON both descended from Nicholas MARTIAU, Huguenot of York Co, VA. His daughter, Elizabeth MARTIAU married Col George READE. Both George and Mildred descended from that line, as does the Queen Mother, Elizabeth. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt). Another sister Mary married Lt. Col.
