About Francis Reade, of King and Queen County

Birth: 1645 Gloucester County Virginia, USA Death: 1694 James City County Virginia, USA

Son of Col George READE and his wife Elizabeth de La Martiau.

In 1663 Francis married in Gloucester, Va to Jane Chisman daughter of Edmund. Francis and Jane were parents to at least 2 children.

Also in Gloucester, Va., between 1680-1693 Francis married Anne Beale daughter of Thomas Beale and Anne Gooch. They were the parents of 4 children.

A daughter of Francis, Anne Reade married Matthew Pate, son of Col. Thomas Pate. This most likely caused great family conflict during the Bacon's Rebellion at Jamestown, VA, since Anne's family was on the Brittish side of the conflict, nad Matthew's family were strong supporters of Bacon's rebel forces.

Notes

From Virginia Historical Genealogies By John Bennett Boddie Hathitrust page 90

While this may prove relationship, it does not exactly prove who were the parents of Thomas Reade of Elizabeth City. He was probably not Thomas, son of Thomas Reade of War- wick, for the Warwick family was not related to any of the above guardians and "next friends" which phrase usually meant "next of kin". (See Beale.) He appears to have been about the right age to be Thomas Reade, son of Francis Reade, of King and Queen. That Thomas was given a legacy in the will of his great grandmother, Alice Beale, probated February 24, 1703. In the will of her son-in-law, William Colston, he is mentioned as being under 18 in 1701. (See Beale.) That Thomas appears to be the only available "Thomas" un- accounted for in the Reade family.
