Jacob testified for Elijah Hunter on Choctaw Freedman card#860, that he knew him all his life and that Elijah lived in Jackson County. Alfred Vinson also testifed that he knew Elijah all his life and that he knew his parents and that he lived near him all the time except when he was in Kiamitia. Elijah testifed that his uncle was John James, his father was Lem Hunter and his mother was Mary Smith. Mary said she was born a slave and she belonged to Mary James, a Choctaw.

Choctaw Freedmen card #826 for Thomas James (son of Lewis James, Sr.) He was examined by the Dawes Commission 8/21/1899 "My mother's name is Winnie Carson. My mother is a state woman. My father is a citizen. He belonged to Reason Jones. I have always lived in the territory. My father is dead. My father and mother were married. That is what they always told me. Testimony given by Martha Vinson: "I know Tom James. This boys father and mother were married. I saw them married. Testimony given by Lewis James (son of Lewis James, Sr.): He said he thought his father was owned by some of the James'. Lewis claimed to have been born in Mayhew. Testimony given by Jacob James (brother of Lewis James, Sr.): He said he and his brother belonged to Ben James and when Ben James died, his children drawed us. I went to one and he went to another. ((according to the 1855 Ben James will, Marth and Jacob were given to Elzira James)) Jacob said Lewis belonged to Reason Jones or Resin, and that Resin was a Choctaw, and when asked if Resin Jones was any relation to Robert Jones he answered that he did not know. The commission asked again if Resin Jones was a Choctaw and Jacob answered yes, sir. He said Resin Jones had one son living named Zack Jones who was living in Jackson County. Testimony was also given by Alfred Vinson. The final decision on this says that Lewis James, Joseph James, and Martha Burris are children of Lewis James who was a slave of one Resin Jones, a recognized Choctaw citizen, during and at the close of the War of The Rebellion. Their enrollment was approved.* Updated from RootsWeb's WorldConnect via father Benjamin James , Jr. by SmartCopy: Mar 3 2015, 0:20:14 UTC
