1855 - as per her father's Will, Harriet received two negros named Sophia and David. I think I have figured out who they are. David James is on Choctaw Freedmen Card#639. He testified that his master was Ben James and also Harriett James. He said Ben James was a Choctaw. David said he had been living in Blue and Jackson counties since he was turned free. The card #640 right next to him is Isaac James. He said he belonged to Nancy James who married after emancipation.
Harriett's age comes from "A Family History of Jeremia Gardner"., by Leroy Gardner 1970
Harriett's grandson mentions a step grandfather by the name of Levi Crain in his Gardner history. So maybe Harriet divorced and remarried Levi Crain? I can't find any info on them.
On the Choctawnation.com, Marie Wong has that Levi Crain was killed at Mt. Pleasant, OK in 1874.
okgenweb.org Not sure who this Harriet is? I see that he also married Mary Keys in 1899. GARDNER, JESSE J GARDNER, HARRIET 2 NOV 1882 BLUE
On son's Dawes card it lists his mother Harriet Gardner and father Green Gardner of Blue County as both dead. The card has a date stamp of August 23, 1899. The enrollment date is stamped 1903.* Updated from RootsWeb's WorldConnect via father Benjamin James , Jr. by SmartCopy: Mar 3 2015, 0:20:14 UTC
