About Emma Jane Scales

She never married but was a noted teacher in Reidsville, where she conducted a private school for years--Reidsville Seminary for Girls, begun in1872. It was later called Reidsville Female Seminary. It had up to 100 students, 20 of whom boarded. She was principal until she retired in 1888. She lived in the home of her brother Alfred Moore Scales and his wife Kate Henderson. In the 1880's she is listed as owning 624 acres of land in Reidsville.
