About James Pinckney Scales
In January, 1852, after examination, he was deemed by several judges of the state Supreme Court to be ready to practice law in several counties in the state. Following his brother William Nathaniel, he moved his family to Carrollton, MS, betweem 1852 and 1853. By 1858, he was Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives and not yet 30 years old. He served in the Civil War as a captain, later promoted to major, of Co. K, 11th Regiment, MS Infantry. He was captured and sent to a Union prison camp, an ordeal from which he never fully recovered. After his wife Kate died in 1861, he married again in 1864. His and Ora's two children both died of yellow fever. Only his and Kate's daughter Kate was left. When James Pinckney died in 1865, young Kate was adopted by her uncle Alfred Moore Scales.
