About Robert Henry Scales
He began his career as a doctor but settled into being a country gentleman. After moving to Reidsville, he became the first elder of the Presbyterian church there. He loved fox hunting and other sports. He lived a quiet life although he apparently had land in Louisiana and had a sugar cane crop there. It is said he followed the new fashion of giving his children two names; he then called them all by their initials. Of his seven sons, six fought in the Civil War. Three sons and a son-in-law died for the Confederate cause.
Son of Col. Nathaniel and Nancy Ann Allen Scales. Husband of Jane Watt Bethell Scales. Father of the famed Alfred Moore Scales, Junius Irving Scales, William Nathaniel Scales (died in Civil War), also Emma J. Scales, Erasmus D. Scales, and Annie E. Scales Montgomery, who were shown in census. (Note: R.H. Scales was mistakenly listed in the 1850 census as R.H. Schales--45,. His dependants were: Jane W.--41 his wife; Alfred M.--22; Pinckney--20(James Pinckney??); J.I.(or Junius Irving)--17; Wallace--15; Sarah--11; Decatur--9 (or Erasmus Decatur); Annie--5.
