Photograph and family information originally gleaned from this source http://www.familytreecircles.com/ernest-feltus-adams-52164.html and later in correspondence with direct descendants.

Ernest Feltus ADAMS was born on 14 May 1865 on the Isle of Man, where his father James was a teacher at the Grammar School. He was the eldest child of the family and would have been about seven years old when they emigrated to New Zealand in 1871 on the SS Great Britain. By then he had three younger siblings.

On 20 April 1892 he married Hannah Maud HALL, daughter of his father's great friend and fellow botanist John HALL. The couple had nine children in all, but in 1912 when the youngest was only three, Hannah died. Her elder sister Ellen Mary (Nell) HALL stepped in to help, and about two years later she and Ernest Feltus were married. She died on 26 April 1939 aged 74. Her twice widowed husband survived many more years before dying on 19 July 1958 aged 93.
