About George Linn
Per family records George Linn married Sobina Roth on November 27, 1862 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Catawissa, Pennsylvania (Columbia County). His second wife Hannah E. is first referenced in the 1880 Census.
Per the 1850 Census George Linn is, 17, living in Montour Township of Columbia County, Pennsylvania with his parents Simon, 45, Rebecca, 42, and his siblings William, 16, Henry, 14, Rebecca, 13, Susanna 11, Simon, 9, Maria, 7, Daniel, 5, John, 1 month old, and his 91 year old grandmother Elizabeth. George Linn stated his occupation as Laborer.
Per the 1860 Census Geo (George) Linn, 27, is living in Montour Township of Columbia County, Pennsylvania with his parents Simon, 49, Rebecca, 46, and this siblings William, 24, Henry, 22, Susan, 19, Simon, 17, Barbara, 8, and his Aunt Mary Houck, 54.
Per US Civil War Draft Registration Records of Pennsylvania in July 1863, a George Linn, 30, was listed as living in Montour Township of Columbia County and stated that he was married. George Linn was born August 15, 1832 so being 30 years old in July 1863 matches the timeframe. The provost marshal registering George Linn was Captain Charles M. Manville, who was appointed to carry out the Conscription Act which was passed in March 3, 1863, calling for the enlistment in military service of all able-bodied males between 20 and 45 years of age for terms of three years.
Per the 1870 Census George Linn, 36, (Spelled Lynn on Document) is living in Montour Township of Columbia County, Pennsylvania with his Aunt Mary Houck, 56, (Spelled Hauck in 1880 Census). George lists his occupation as Laborer.
It is believed that George Linn married Hannah Elizabeth Tonkinson in approximately 1872 or 1873 (1873 was the year their first child Sarah R. Linn was born).
Per the 1880 Census George Linn is, 47, living in Mifflin Township of Columbia County, Pennsylvania with his second wife Hannah E., 31, and their son Charles H. 1 year old. George lists his occupation as working on the railroad. His wife Hannah Elizabeth was born on October 16, 1851 in Pennsylvania.
George Linn died in 1887, between the 1880 and 1900 Census. Per the 1900 Census Hannah Elizabeth Linn was widowed with the following children in the household in Catawissa, Columbia County, Pennsylvania: Henry C., (Charles Henry) 21, George S. (George Samuel), 17, Amos F.(Amos Folk), 15, Emma J. 13, and Frank (Frank James), 9. Hannah E. lists her birth as October 1851, Henry C., February 1879, George S. February 1883, Amos F. May 1885, Emma J. October 1886, and Frank January 1891. Sons Henry C. and George S. worked on shoes as an occupation.
Per family history some of the Linn family used 'y' instead of 'i' in their last names because there were so many members of the extended family that worked on the railroad which caused a great amount of confusion in written and printed communications, paychecks, etc. which then necessitated a way to tell one from the other. Both spellings are found in all generations but it is beleived that Linn was the original spelling.
Children of George Linn / Lynn and Hannah Elizabeth Linn / Lynn are as follows:
Sarah R. Linn (b. February 5, 1873 d. February 24, 1877) Mary E. Linn (b. Mary 25, 1875 d. February 14, 1877) Isa W. Linn (b. March 29, 1876 d. November 25, 1879). Charles Henry (b. February 13, 1878 d. September 29, 1959) George Samuel (b. February 4, 1883) Amos Folk (b. May 14, 1885) Emma J. (b. October of 1887 d. August 15, 1946) Frank James (b. January of 1891).
A Leo Linn, 5, appears within the Hannah Elizabeth Linn, 59, household in Bloomsburg, Ward 4, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, in the 1910 Census. Emma, 23, and Frank, 19, are also in the home. Leo would have been born in approximately 1905 thus he would not have been George Linn's son if he indeed died in 1887. Perhaps Leo was a grandson or was adopted even though he was listed as her son. Per the 1910 Census Hannah Elizabeth Linn had 10 children 6 of them who were currently living at the time. Strangley in this Census Frank Linn was listed as being born in Ohio which must have been a mistake by the Census taker. Emma and Frank both worked as Spinners in the Carpet Mill.
Per the 1920 Census, Hannah, 69, was living in Bloomsburg, Ward 3, Columbia County, Pennsylvania with her son George Lynn (George Samuel Lynn), 37, and his children: Edward, 13, Carl, 4 years 3/12 months, and Blanche, 2 years 1/12 months. George Samuel Lynn was widowed. Hannah stated that her father was born in England and her mother was born in Pennsylvania. George Samuel Lynn worked as a Laborer in Car Shops. It is believed that George Samuel died in 1956.
George Linn is buried at the St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Grovania, Montour County, Pennsylvania with a large number of his family members. It is interesting to note that on his tombstone that the 'i' Linn spelling is used, therefore his children most likely maintained the Linn spelling as well.
“Widows Appraisement” found in “The Columbian,” Bloomsburg, PA Friday, November 18, 1887" confirms George Linn / Lynn's death as occurring in 1887.
