About George Squires
In 1870 and 1881 a George Squires was a professor of music and singing and piano-forte tuner at Friar Street, Cashel - Slater's Directory. The 1870 reference must refer to his father. The 1881 reference could be an out-of-date reference to his father, who died in 1875: it contradicts other evidence that this George was a soldier.
The soldier was living in Clonmel when recruited. He claimed to be 18 years 11 months on enlistment, but if he was this George he was only 17 years 3 months. The birth date used here comes from the family paper "George Squires descendants" attached to his father's record. He was temporarily demoted from Corporal for drunkenness. Army records state that he was in home service 2 June 1866 to 14 September 1868 and 23 December 1879 to 31 August 1888, and in the "East Indies" between these dates; in the Work section, East Indies is assumed to be India except for 28 December 1878 when medical records have him in Aden.
1891, living in Hunslet, Yorkshire, as a lodger.
1901, living at 37 Woodhouse Hill Road, Hunslet, with his children George (6), Alice (4), and Robert (2).
