About George Alfred Squires

Date of baptism from Berkshire Baptisms Index and England Births & Baptisms 1538-1975 on findmypast.ie. Date of birth from the former.

"Emily Jane's ... father was English & worked as a silversmith & came to Tipperary" - Bill Goodwillie. Since Emily Jane's father William Alfred was born in England and, presuming that he lived with his parents, came to Cashel before he was three, it seems more likely that this refers to Emily Jane's grandfather George. George's job as Vicar Choral would have been part-time and George could have worked as a silversmith simultaneously. However, there is no other evidence of either father or son being a silversmith.

The English census of 1841 records a 20-year-old George Squires, professor of music, living at St Peter Place in the parish of Holy Cross Westgate Within in Canterbury, born elsewhere than in Kent: all these details are compatible with it being this George Squires. His marriage certificate records him as being a lay clerk of the cathedral living at St Peter's Place.

In 1846 George Squires was a deputy vicar choral of Cashel Cathedral, and a professor of music and singing and piano-forte tuner at 47 John Street, Cashel - Slater's Directory.

In 1848 George Squires, vicar choral, of Cashel, signed the petition for clemency for William Smith O'Brien.

In 1850 George Squires was tenant of 18 Main Street, Cashel, rented from the Very Rev. Samuel Adams, who was Dean of Cashel - Griffith's Valuation.

In 1856 George Squires was parish clerk and vicar choral at the Cathedral and John Street parochial church, and professor of music and singing and piano-forte tuner at Friar Street, Cashel - Slater's Directory.

When his daughter Caroline was married in 1864, her address was given as Friar Street, Cashel.

In 1870 and 1881 a George Squires was a professor of music and singing and piano-forte tuner at Friar Street, Cashel - Slater's Directory. The 1881 reference is either out of date or refers to his son George, who alternatively was a soldier at this date.

The death date of 1st April 1875 comes from his death certificate, which is for the vicar choral. Although 1st April 1895 is on the descendants' document, the coincidence of day of death means that this must be a mistake.

The descendants' document is headed "Crest Wyvern Essex". This must relate to the fact that a Squires family of Essex had a coat-of-arms with a wyvern: "On a wheel a wyvern with wings addorsed ppr." - Fairbairn's book of crests of the families of Great Britain and Ireland. Whether a relationship to this family had been traced is unclear.
