As the sixth son of Fath ‘Ali Shah, born to the daughter of an Arab chief of Bastam, he was nominated Governorof Tehran, Bastam and Jajerm at fifteen.

More surprisingly, he was entrustedwith the wedding arrangements of his royal father to the lovely Georgian,Tavus Khanum of Isfahan (later Taj ed-Dowleh), in whose honor the Takht-eKhorshid (the Sun Throne, wrongly known as the Peacock Throne) wasordered to be wrought.

In 1816 he was sent to succeed Mohammad ValiMirza as Governor of Khorasan where he had to deal with more of thesame—Khorasani tribes, Afghan princelings as friend or foe, Turkoman andKhivan raiders in addition to the chief of the Hazaras of Khorasan.
