Hazel Kvitek, age 89, formerly of Lowry, Minnesota died September 6, 2001 at the Minnewaska District Hospital in Starbuck. Mass of Christian burial was September 10, 2001 at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church, rural Lowry with Father Thomas Becker officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Hazel Kvitek, the daughter of Leander and Maria (Nurmesniemi) Elkie, was born January 29, 1912, in Wing, North Dakota. They moved to Moose Lake, Minnesota when she was six years old. They then moved to Urness Township, Douglas County where she attended District #70 school. She was united in marriage to Edwin Kvitek April 25, 1932 at the Reno parish house. Hazel and Edwin farmed in the Reno area. Hazel worked on the farm milking cows, raising geese and had laying hens. She did lots of canning, loved cooking and her specialty was making sauerkraut. She enjoyed following her husband Eddie, who played the concertina and was known as the "Concertina King", around the area. Eddie had his own band called Eddie's Jolly Bohemians.
Hazel is survived by two sisters: Tina Enberg of Alexandria; Hilma (Roy) Pipo of Kensington and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Edwin; daughter Rosellen; sisters: Lempi, Helmie, Hillia, Hilda, Lizzie and Hulda; and brother, Leo. Casket bearers were Raymond Josephson, Robert Kvitek, Jack Kangas Loren Iverson, Gary Adamson and Dan Kvitek and the honorary bearers were Carlos Lordalen, Leo Elkie, Merlyn Johnson, Johnny Peterson, Norman Kvitek and Lynette Fahje. Arrangements were with the Hoplin Funeral Home in Glenwood.
