Tina Helen Elkie was born on September 23, 1917 in Wing, North Dakota. Her parents were Leo and Marie Niemi (Elkie). She had eight sisters and one brother. At the age of four Tina and her family moved to Wolf Lake, Minnesota and later to Urness Township. She married Orin Carmen Enberg on August 19, 1942 in Douglas County. He was in the Army at the time. They lived briefly in the state of Mississippi and Duluth before settling in Douglas County. They resided there until Orin became ill and could no longer work on the farm and from then on they lived in Alexandria.
In 1958 Orin died of cancer. Tina remained in her home until the age of 82 when she suffered a stroke. She moved to the Bethany Home in Alexandria in December of 1999. During her stay at Bethany Tina made many friends among the residents and staff and became well known for her honesty and sense of humor. She developed and struggled with congestive heart failure for the past several months. Tiny died at Bethany home on September 13, 2002 among friends and family. She was ready, in fact, impatient, to go home to God.
Tina is survived by her sister: Hilma Pipo; three children: Doris Norstebon; Donald Enberg; Brenda Davis, 13 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren.
Tina will be remembered as a local radio celebrity the KXRA Birthday Club program. She expressed much wit, wisdom and humor talking with co-anchors Dennis and Kelly. She was also well known for her famous Finnish home made bread, always sending neighbors and other friends and family home with fresh baked loaves. Tina enjoyed fishing, gardening, pets, especially her cat Christy, playing Scrabble and watching television, especially Jeopardy. She will always be remembered for her strength of character, unique sense of humor and generosity. We will miss her but she will remain forever in our hearts.
Funeral services were held on Monday, September 16, 2002 at 1 p.m. at the Finnish Apostolic Church in Moe Township with Bill Tuominin officiating. Interment was at the Finnish Apostolic Cemetery. Services were directed by Petermeier's Alexandria Funeral Care and Cremation Service.
