Biography
Hope Howland, daughter of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley, was born in Plymouth Colony about 1629.[1] The Mayflower Society makes note of a possible birth date of 30 Aug 1629, but states that no primary record has been found to support this date.[2] She died, age 53, on 8 Jan 1683[3][4] and was buried 9 Jan at Lothrop Hill Cemetery, Barnstable, Barnstable, Massachusetts.[5]
Hope married about 1647 Elder John Chipman, son of Thomas Chipman. Born about 1621 in Brinspittal, Dorset, John was baptized at Brinspittal on 30 Aug 1621. John died on 7 Apr 1708 at Sandwich, MA.[6]
In a memoir Handley Chipman wrote five and six years before his death in 1799, he stated that his grandfather was John Chipman who married a daughter of Mr. Howland, and settled at Barnstable. He wrote that his grandfather was an Elder in Minister Russel's Congregational Church in Barnstable. He also said that his grandfather "removed and lived in said Sandwich the latter part of his day." He died at age 88, and had, or left 10 children.[7]

Hope was born in Plymouth, MA 30 August 1629, the third child and second daughter of John Howland and his wife Elizabeth Tilley. Both of her parents and her maternal grandparents arrived in December 1620 as passengers in the Mayflower. She died in Barnstable on January 8, 1683 at 54 years old and was buried in Lothrop's Hill Cemetery. .She married John Chipman about 1646 in Rocky Nook, then part of Plymouth but now Kingston, Mass. and had twelve children.
"The Howland Family" Compiled by William F. Gilson 1975-1977 p.15 exhaustive study of three sons who came to America with an emphasis on Henry who came over on the Mayflower. Includes promenent people who are related. This book can be found on Microfilm in the Family history library catalogue number XLIB7-102 #740 Mr Gilson gives his address as 3081 Pine Gully Houston Texas 77017.
