She was the daughter of John Chipman and Hope Howland.[1] Under the Barnstable, Massachusetts Vital Records entry for the births of John Chipman's children, it says: "Ruth born ye Last of December 1663"[2] Ruth was a descendant of Mayflower passengers John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley.

On 7 Apr 1682, when Ruth was 18, she married at Barnstable Eleazer Crocker, son of William Crocker (ca 1608-bef 19 Oct 1692) and Alice (-May 1684). Eleazer was born on 21 Jul 1650 at Barnstable.[3]
