Delphos Republican January 3, 1946

Mrs. Belle Hare Dies Isabelle, daughter of James P. and Harriet Rose Martin was born near Waterloo, Iowa, November 8, 1858 and died at her home in Delphos, Kansas, Monday evening, December 31, 1945 at the age of 87 years, 1 month and 23 days.

Her childhood and young womanhood were spent in Iowa and Missouri. She came to Abilene, Kansas, in the spring of 1880 and was employed there for a short time.

On October 21, 1880 she was united in marriage to Jeremiah Marshall Hare at Beloit, Kansas. The spent fifty-one years together. She was the mother of three children, one of whom died in infancy. She is survived by her daughter, Helen Virginia Breen, her son, Jay; and by two grandsons, Wilfred Earl Hare, Green Cove Springs, Florida, and Wendell Farrar Hare of San Diego, California, both in the United States Navy. Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. T.W. Tipton of Portland, Ore., a number of nieces and nephews and countless friends.

She and her husband established their home when the state was young and endured many hardships of pioneer life. She watched this community grow from a prairie settlement to what it is today and had her part in its development.

Mr. and Mrs. Hare moved to Delphos in November 1917 to spend their declining years. On July 23, 1931, her companion preceded her in death. She has lived alone in the present home for 14 years.

She was a member of the Methodist Church, the Woman's Relief Corps, the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, the Woman's Society of Christian Service, and the Rebekah Lodge, and took part in their activities as long as she was able. Her life's record is an open book of right living and unselfish devotion to her family and her friends. She was alert and informed on all the affairs of the times. Her radio was in constant use and a great satisfaction to her.

It is a source of satisfaction to her family and her many friends that she took her leave as she had wished, quickly, quietly and peacefully – without suffering, without anxiety and trouble to her loved ones. As the year of 1945 ended, her long life of usefulness and unselfishness came to a close. She had lived fully and courageously. As advancing years brought attending infirmities, she continued self reliant and unafraid, carrying on alone until the end. While the Old Year lingered in its last hours, she fell asleep, and entered into her Eternal rest "As one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him, and lies down to pleasant dreams".

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. H.G. Feldmann in charge. Music was furnished by a duet composed of Mrs. Maude Warren and Mrs. North Worrel accompanied by Mrs. H.R. Harmon. Pallbearers were H.C. Davis, A.D. Rice, Forney Davis, Hal Pilcher, Lester Colton and Lester Pilcher. Burial was in the Delphos Cemetery. Hartley Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
