About Isie Caroline Heath

Most of my information on this family came from Mark Lawless of Austin,TX. Census data also provided by Mark. He has been the most help in getting information on other families of Charles Darby Jr. and Nancy Biddy's children. Thank you very much Mark.

William and Icey may be buried at Four Mile Baptist Church Cemetery, Pickens County, GA, in graves marked only by fieldstones (possibly just behind Reuben Darby's grave and to the left of James Darby's grave).

WILLIAM AND ICEY HEATH'S DATES OF DEATH: On January 25, 1907, William and Icey's daughter, Elizabeth Heath, made a claim for Indian ancestry with the U. S. Court of Claims. The Court rejected her claim. In her claim application, however, Elizabeth listed William's date of death as February 14, 1901, and "Isie's" date of death as June 10, 1892. She did not list their place of death. I have found no other record to verify either William or Icey's date of death, and have been unable to find William in the 1900 census.

CENSUS DATA FOR ICEY CAROLINE DARBY:

  • note: In later censuses, Isie lists her place of birth as Georgia but she is more than likely the daughter listed in the 1820 census of Spartanburg County, SC with her father. I believe she was actually born in South Carolina but they moved to Georgia and all she ever knew from her youth was being in Georgia and always stated her birth as being from Georgia. (J. Daniel Peardon)

1820 Spartanburg County, SC (p. ) [at home] ??(possibly)

1830 [at home] ??

1840 Forsyth County, GA (Dist. 835, p. 273b) -- William Heath (between 20 - 30), living with one male under 5 (probably Frances Marion), one female between 15 - 20 (probably Icey Caroline) and one female under 5 (unknown, possibly Samantha)

1850 Forsyth County, GA (p. 158a) -- William (35, SC, farmer), Icey (30, GA), Francis M. (13, GA), Elizabeth (10, GA), Mary C. (7, GA), and Nancy (4, GA) Heath. Living nearby are Icey's parents, Charles and Nancy [Biddy] Darby, and their four children (Winchester, Sarah, Reuben, and Charles N.).

1860 Dug Road, Pickens County, GA (p. 885) -- William (40, NC, farmer), Icey (34, GA), Mary C. (14, GA), Nancy A. (12, GA), Benjamin (9, GA), and Margaret J. (7/12, GA) Heath. Living nearby are Icey's parents, Charles and Nancy [Biddy] Darby, and their son Newton, and Icey's brothers, James and Reuben Darby, and their families.

1870 Jasper, Pickens County, GA (p. 13a) -- William (57, GA, farmer), Icey Caroline (50, GA, keeping house), Benjamin (19, GA, idiot), Margaret (8, GA), and Frederick S. (6, GA) Heath. Living next door are William and Icey's son, Frances Marion Heath, his spouse, Nancy (Bozeman), and their five children. Also living next door are John Bozeman (Nancy Bozeman's brother) and his spouse, Sarah (Darby, Icey's sister), and their five children. A large number of other Heaths, Darbys, and Bozemans lived nearby.

1880 Dug Road, Pickens County, GA (p. 532b) -- William (65, SC SC SC, farmer), Icey C. (60, GA SC SC, keeping house), Benjamin (29, GA SC GA) and Margaret S. (20, GA SC GA) Heath. Living next door are Robert Heath (relation unknown) living with his spouse, Elizabeth [Heath] (William and Icey's daughter), and their four children. William and Icey's son, Frances Marion, and his family were living in nearby Forsyth County at the time of the 1900 census.

1900 -- Icey died in 1892 (probably in Pickens County). William died in 1901 (probably in GA), but I cannot find him in the 1900 census.

BIRTHPLACES OF CHILDREN: At least one internet source indicates that each of William and Icey's children was born in Forsyth County, GA. However, as noted above, William and Icey moved to Pickens County (or what became Pickens County in 1853) some time between 1850 and 1860. Therefore, it is likely that some or all of their children born after 1850 were born in Pickens County, not Forsyth County. ___________________________________ POSSIBLE ADDITIONAL CHILD: As verified by census data, William and Icey had at least 7 children, 3 sons and 4 daughters. The 1840 Forsyth County census indicates that a female under 5 years of age was living in the William Heath household. The earliest known daughter of William and Icey is Elizabeth who was born between 1840 and 1844, possibly after the 1840 census enumeration date. Therefore, it is possible that William and Icey had an additional daughter born between about 1835 - 1840, probably in Forsyth County. Since this daughter (if she existed) does not appear in the 1850 census, she either died before 1850, was living with someone else in 1850, or married very young and was living away from home in 1850. I have found no record to verify this additional daughter. Timothy Turner, in his October 24, 2002 Heath Family Genealogy Forum posting, indicates that William and Icey had an additional daughter, Samantha, who married an unknown Worley. No dates of birth, death or marriage are given. I have found no record of an additional child named Samantha, and I am guessing that Samantha may have been the known daughter, Margaret S. (Samantha?) Heath, who married James Worley, the son of John David Worley and Evaline Caroline Collett. I did find a Samantha Heath that married William H. Evans November 11, 1852 in Butts County, GA. This William and Samantha Evans were in Rusk County, TX at the time of the 1860 census and had one child. According to the 1860, this Samantha was 22 years old (b. about 1838) and born in GA. This Samantha, however, likely is the daughter of Dawson and Nancy Heath [relation unknown] from Butts County, GA. (Mark Lawless)
