NOTE about the 1870 census: Newton and Clarinda appear twice in the 1870 Pickens County census. There is a substantial discrepancy in ages between the two entries. I believe that the second entry (at p. 13a) more accurately reflects the actual ages of the family members based on other available information. Also, one entry lists a child named Susannah (age 1), and the other a Catherine (age 2). I believe that Susannah and Catherine are the same person, i.e., Catherine Susannah or Susannah Catherine. By combining Susannah and Catherine into one person, that gives Newton and Clarinda a total of 6 children, which is consistent with the 1900 and 1910 census (6 children, 5 living, in both)
