James Anderson Boggs

James A. Boggs engaged in farming and lumbering, and afterwards in the mercantile business. He invested largely in real estate and was one of the largest land owners in Braxton county, besides owning large boundaries in Clay and Roane Counties. He was elected to represent Braxton county in the last session of the legislature.

James was a son of James Clendenin Boggs and Mary Polly LeMasters. He married Susan Lemasters Cutlip on 06 Mar 1834 in Nicholas (Now Braxton Co) West Virginia. She was a daughter of George Cutlip and Mary Murphy.

James Anderson Boggs, born November 10, 1815, in that part of Lewis County now Braxton, was a son of James C. and Mary (LeMasters) Boggs, who were among the pioneer settlers in this vicinity. On March 6, 1834, he married Susanna Cutlip in Nicholas County. She was born in Greenbrier County, April 28, 1812, daughter of George and Mary (Murphy) Cutlip, who later moved to Braxton. The Boggs' were the parents of George C., Isaac, Agnes J., Mary B., James Martin, John L., Henry Clay, Peyton J., Johnston W., Harriet, and Charles A.

James A. Boggs began life for himself a poor boy, and by industry, energy and economy achieved independence and owned $70,000.00 worth of real estate in Braxton, Clay, Webster, and Roane Counties.

June 02, 1843 (Braxton) James A. Boggs, for natural love, deeded to James A. Boggs a 48? acre tract on Elk River plus 52 acres adjoining Francis Boggs and Siala Boggs on Sparkes Run. Braxton Deed Book 2, p. 178.

1865 (Braxton) The mill on Elk River opposite the town of Sutton was built at the close of the Civil War by James A. Boggs and Benjamin Huffman. Huffman later bought Boggs' interest in the mill. Sutton, History of Braxton County, p. 215.

James Anderson Boggs represented his district in the state legislature, session of 1882-83, and was present at every vote taken during the session. He favored submitting the question of prohibition to a vote of the people. He united with the Baptist Church in 1869 and was a faithful and consistent member.

The obituary of James, was published in the Braxton County Democrat, Thursday, April 9th 1884. It reads as follows:

"James Anderson Boggs Esq., one of the old landmarks of this county, died at his residence at the mouth of Little Otter, Saturday morning, March 22nd, 1884, at half past one o'clock. He had been gradually declining for several months and his death was not unexpected. He was a member of the Baptist church. He faced death calmly and quietly. His remains were interred in the graveyard on his farm on Sunday the 23rd. James A. Boggs, was a good friend and kind neighbor, a devoted husband and affectionate father, and by his death, the people of this county lost one of their best citizens. He leaves a wife, who has been seriously ill, and confined to her bed for several months, having lived her three score and ten years, and by the laws of nature will follow her husband to "undiscovered county." The Father of James A. Boggs, was James C. Boggs, on of the first settlers of this county. He settled on what is known as the Boggs farm on Elk river, eleven miles below the place about the year 1809, at which place the subject of this sketch was born, on the 10th of November, 1815. He was therefore nearly sixty nine years old at the time of his death. His mother was Mary, eldest daughter of Benjamin LeMasters, who settled on Bucks Garden, a branch of Peters Creek, now Nicholas Co., about a 100 years ago, where he raised a family of ten children, all daughters. When Mr. LeMasters died the name became extinct. That section of the country was then inhabited by Indians, and when Mr. LeMasters was at work in the fields, his daughter Mary would carry his gun and remain close to him, in order to be prepared, should the Indians attack him. James A. Boggs, raised a large family, most of whom survive him. When he was a young man, he engaged in farming and lumbering, and afterwards in the mercantile business. He invested largely in real estate and was one of the largest land owners in the county, besides owning large boundaries in Clay and Roane Counties.
