About John Riley Atchley, Sr

Son of Joseph Atchley Jr and Mary (Smith) Atchley. First husband of Rachel Pauline (Tillery) Atchley, whom he married on 27 Jul 1851 in Meigs County, Tennessee.

Father of ten known children: Emerson Jackson Atchley, William Pearson Atchley, Mahala "Mamie" Tennessee (Atchley) Marshall, the Reverend John Riley Atchley Jr, Liza Ann Atchley, Priscilla Abigail (Atchley) Atchley, Sarah Alice (Atchley) Atchley, Joseph Alexander Atchley, Parolee (Atchley) Atchley, and Thomas Jefferson Atchley.

38-year-old John enlisted as a Private in Co "C," McKenzie's 5th Tennessee Cavalry, CSA, on 13 Feb 1863. The Federal Army captured him near Floyd, Rome County, GA, in Mar 1864. This unexplained absence from his military unit prompted a label of "deserter" to be recorded on his Confederate Military Record, when in fact, he was being held as a Prisoner of War.

Although he had family in Red River County, TX, he moved his family to Lancaster, Dallas County, TX in 1877. He and his sons were working Dallas County, TX, land owned by his son, William Pearson Atchley in 1880.

While his precise date of death and burial location are not known, he died in Hamilton County, TX, before 30 Sep 1887, when his wife, Rachel Pauline remarried.

This FindaGrave memorial commemorating his life has been located here at Roosevelt Cemetery, because this is the burial location of his only wife, Rachel Pauline (Tillery) Atchley; his daughters, Sarah Alice (Atchley) Atchley and Parolee (Atchley) Atchley; and his brother, Joseph Alexander Atchley.
