Joseph Alexander Atchley

Janine L. Hunter (#47147977) submitted this information: Joseph Alexander "Alec" Atchley, son of Joseph Atchley and Mary (Smith) Atchley and husband of 1) Jane Buster and 2) Malindia (Smith) Atchley.

"Alec" was born in Sewee, Meigs County, TN, where he married his first wife, Jane Buster, on 16 Sep 1860. He moved with the Busters to Pope County, Illinois, in 1861. There, in Feb 1862, Jane died after giving birth to their only son, William "Bill" Joseph Riley Atchley.

"Alex" then married his first cousin, Malindia Smith on 23 Feb 1862. To his union with Malindia were born ten known children in the following birth order: Noah Rector, Newton Daniel "Dan," James Emerson "Em," Margaret "Maggie" I (Atchley) Brothers, Joseph Alexander Jr, Mary Jane (Atchley) Tucker, Elijah "Lige" Pearce, Francis Marion "Bob," Alice, and Katie Melissa (Atchley) Butler.

In about 1874, "Alec" moved his family from Illinois to Red River County, TX, to join several of his brothers who lived in that area. When the Oklahoman territory for the future Kiowa County opened to white settlement in 1901, the extended family homesteaded along the Otter Creek in Kiowa County.

He rests next to his second wife here in Roosevelt Cemetery and is surrounded by extended family sharing this final place of rest.
