Norfolk, England Parish Record found of John Barker and his father Robert Barker put into the sources tab.
John BARKER was a proprietor in Marshfield, about 10 miles north of Plymouth, as early as 5 Nov 1638 where he was first mentioned in Plymouth County records. John Barker was a bricklayer by trade & a Ferryman over the Jones River. In the year of 1638/9 he agreed to take on William Barden as his apprentice to teach him the trade of Bricklaying. In this same year he was granted 40 acres of upland per John Barker In The Macdonough-Hackstaff Ancestry pg. 423 where his dear brother is Robert Barker
John had purchased this ferry from John, son of Elder BREWSTER along with ownership of a farm of 100 acres on North River, the meadow on North River and South River and the ferry boat and ferry house. In 1648 he was a grand juryman for the General Court.
About 1652 he was drowned from the ferry (at Little Bridge) and his estate was administered 17 Dec 1652.
Note: emmigration of Robert Barker was actually 1632 and it is likely that John came later ... ca 1636.
NEGHS:
Otis and Deane claim that John Barker married in 1632 Ann Williams, daughter of John Williams of Scituate, also claiming that the latter came in 1632 with Timothy Hatherly. There are a number of problems with this. First, the earliest record of John Williams is on 5 March 1638/9, when he was propounded for a freeman of Plymouth Colony [ PCR 1:116], and the first record of John Barker is as a proprietor of Marshfield on 5 November 1638 [ Pope 32]. Second, the other known children of John Williams marry or first appear in the records in the late 1640s and early 1650s. Third, John Barker's children were three daughters who married between 1660 and 1668, indicating births in the 1640s. The likely time of arrival for both John Barker and John Williams is late in the 1630s.
Older notes follow: The Nathan Barker Descendancy Compiled by WILLIAM G. LORD 1931 (extracts and BARKER data are all of this source)
The first of our line in America is John Barker of Duxbury, Mass., who with his brother Robert arrived at Plymouth about 1628. After some cruising for a suitable location John settled in the northerly part of Plymouth, which in 1637 became a part of the then new municipality of Duxbury. Here he followed his trade as a brick mason until 1638 when he invested in a ferry across the Jones River in the adjoining town of Marshfield and removed there, where he continued to carry passengers at two pence per person until an accidental drowning at his ferry ended his career on December 14, 1652. During his residence at Marshfield he served for a time in its military company and was made a freeman there a year and a half before his death.

Barker, Robert abt 1580 in Co., Kent, Eng., d. in Kent, Eng. He m. Catherine Ackworth abt 1614 Co. Kent.
[A document on the web says Robert Barker, of Kent and Catherine Barker were married in 1600 at St.. Andrews in Plymouth, Devonshire, Eng.. This source continues by stating that Catherine was born about 1584 in Kent, and died in Kent, she being the daughter of George Ackworth. In addition it states there is a direct line of descent from "Randulph de Calverhall, 1200 of England". Again there were no sources indicated and I tend to shy away from extended English lines prior to emigration unless the line of descent is widely acknowledged and I've seen nothing else that would tend to support this. I would appreciate it if someone could supply proof of this line that is endorsed by modern sources.]
Children:
- 1. JOHN BARKER SR.
- 2. Robert Barker, b. 1616 in Kent, England, d. 15 Mar. 1691 in Pembroke, Plymouth Co., MA., age 74. Robert married Lucy Williams in 1639. [UNPROVEN]
