About John Davey
Mr John Davey was a brother of William Davey senior, John had been said to have grown into a portly individual with not much business sense( from compilers Grandmothers & her Father Wm Davey) notes researched during 1920s) Although this is probably said in comparison of wealthier Davey members that were more prosperous in Victorian times. Early on John was a greengrocer with his older brother William prior to his marriage to Elizabeth in 1862. john was for a while a car man, as in carrying transport of goods',a brewers dray man, this was probably because of the business owned by William Davey he did however latterly become a publican, as his brother William (when William became ill laterally 1883/84) he probably provided John the opportunity to run one of the Davey public houses but this again, as his previous work ended in failing after a short period. Which public house is not noted however , one census record states under John Licensed victuallar out of business.**** So it appears that failed at that date.( See below 2017 discovery) Also please see Mary Ann & Joseph Davey profiles. His brother William made a rather "conplex will" just before he died in July 1885 . John did not inherit the public houses or the assets contained in the Davey estate which included 26 leasehold & freehold dwellings variously around Islington.
( see Joseph & Sarah Jane)John & his family lived in Bingfield street for over 15 years the property being owned by William snr, then later on his family address was number 2 or 3 Hanley road,( could be due to renumbering) the main William Davey famliy residence in the 1880s. This house was called laburnham villa. John had boarders in his home on occasions to supplement income & as a way to have household staff! ( later family knowledge explains this) John died in about 1905 at age 66? That period the family home was 159 hanley rd!
John & his whole family were with the address of Sidney road Stockwell at the Grosvenor arms public house (by coincidence recently closed down 2014) As is seen below several daughters were assistants in the pub presumably as of right age 1891/John Davey/Licensed Victualler/52/Islington, London/Census **** 1891/Elizabeth Davey/Wife/49/Islington, London/Census 1891/Elizabeth J Davey/Daughter, Assistant/27/Islington, London/Census 1891/Maria Davey/Daughter, Assistant/25/Islington, London/Census 1891/Jane H Davey/Daughter, Assistant/24/Islington, London/Census 1891/John Davey/Son, Assistant/22/Islington, London/Census 1891/Louise Davey/Daughter, Assistant/20/Islington, London/Census 1891/Annie Davey/Daughter/17/Islington, London/Census 1891/Ada M Davey/Daughter/14/Islington, London/Census 1891/Albert W Davey/Son/12/Islington, London/Census 1891/Arthur Davey/Son/10/Islington, London/Census
