Taken from the Descendants of John Irish:
In 1655 Myles Standish has mentioned him in his Will as follows:
"Further my Will is, that my servant John Irtish Jr., have 40 shillings more than his covenant which will appear in the Town Book alwase, provided that he continue till the time he covenanted bee expired in the servide of my executors or any of them with their joint consent by will." Dated March 7, 1655 and signed by Myles Standish. John Irish Jr. is credited with being the second settler on Saconnet soil in Little Compton, Rhode Island. During the Revolutionary War, his Block House was one of five houses used as watch houses on "Brimstone Hill." It has been remodeled and enlarged and has been done in oils by the artist, Sidney Burleigh. This house still stands on his lot Number 16 and is located about 1 1/2 miles West and North of the village of Little Compton, on the old farm situated directly across the street from the Old Friends Meeting House of Little Compton, with a plaque in front stating: "Home of John Irish, 2nd settler of Little Compton, Rhode Island Block House." The tombstones of John Irish and his wife, Elizabeth now stand in the little plum thicket in the Northest corner of their old farm, and the inscriptions which are still easily read are:
- "Here lies the body of John Irish, who dyed Febr'y 21st, 1717 in the 76th year of his age."
- "Here lies the body of Elizabeth, wife of John Irish, who dyed March the 8th, 1707 in the 53rd year of her age."
- (printed in 1964 by Willis Luther Irish)
