• 1 Henry Kemball1, b. perhaps at Lawford, in the county of Essex, England, son of Richard Kemball of Lawford, wheelwright. Richard's will was proved Sept. 10, 1619. He gives to "my elldest sonne Henry Kemball all my worken Tooles belongeinge to my trad Except out of them as many as shall be fittinge for to searue to axe a cart withall." All the rest of his estate he leaves to his wife, Elizabeth, with the condition that as a "mother shee shall see all my children vertiouslye broughte upp, in the feare of God, according to her poore estate and Abilitye." Henry, the emigrant, may have been the Henry mentioned in the above will. This is, however, a matter of conjecture. We do know, however, that at one time he lived in the adjoining parish, for Henry Kemball of Mistley singleman and Susan Cutting widow of the parish of Great Bromley were married Nov. 27, 1628. • Cutting. Richard Cutting and Susan Stone were married Aug. 3, 1620, at Great Bromley. "Richard Cuttinge, the sonne of Richard Cuttinge, was baptized the sixth day of ffebruarie 1621."
• Susan Cuttinge, the daughter of Richard Cuttinge and Susan his wife was bap: the xjth of September 1625. The will of Richard Cutting of "Much Bromley" July 27, 1627, mentions his wife Susan and his children Richard and Susan. Richard came with his mother to this country and settled in Watertown, Mass. His descendants are given in Bond's History of Watertown. Henry Kemball died in 1648. His inventory is dated July 22, 1648. His homestead in Watertown was situated near the corner of what are now Belmont and Common streets. He also owned land in other parts of the town.
• Henry Kemball's widow, Susan, married for her third husband one Loe or Low. She survived him and died Aug. 19, 1684, aged 86.
• At a court appointed 1651, Thomas Straite acknowledged that he had received his wife Elizabeth's share of her father's estate. John Randall also acknowledged that he had received Susanna's share.
• In Bond's Watertown three more children are given as belonging to Henry. This careless error is also found in Savage's Dictionary. They were the children of Henry and Mary (Wyatt) Kimball of Wenham, Mass., as shown by the Watertown records. This Henry Kimball2 was the son of Richard Kimball1, and for some time after he was married he lived in Watertown, Mass. After the birth of these three children he moved to Ipswich and then to Wenham, Mass.

• Richard Kemball1 came to this country in the ship Elizabeth, William Andrews, master, in 1634. He appears to have gone, soon after landing, to Watertown, Mass. He settled in a different part of the town from that occupied by Henry Kemball1. According to Bond and other writers Richard and Henry were brothers. There is but little evidence to support this supposition, and it seems to be mainly founded on the fact that they both came over on the same vessel. Richard is said on the shipping list to be thirty-nine years old, but he was probably somewhat older. He was, however, in the prime of life, and soon became a prominent and active man in the new settlement.

• .... On the twenty-second of the following June the earthly pilgrimage of Richard Kimball ended, and, aged more than eighty years, he joined the great majority.
• His wife did not long survive him, but died the succeeding spring, March 1, 1676. Richard Kimball1 was well to do for those early days. The inventory of his estate, which was taken July 12, 1675, and returned to court Sept. 28, 1675, amounted to £737 3s. 6d. He had already given to his children at their marriages.

  • 2 ii. Henry Kimball2, b. Rattlesden, Suffolk county, England. There seems to be some doubt as to Henry's exact age. It is given on the shipping list as aged fifteen, in 1634. This would give the year of his birth as 1619. But it is evident that the ages on the shipping list are only approximate. Henry himself deposes in court, Sept. 28, 1669, that he is aged 53. This would give the year of his birth as 1616. But the parish records at Rattlesden are as follows: "12, Aug, 1615 Henry Kemball ye sone of Richard and Vrsula his wife baptized."
  • iii. Elizabeth Kimball2, b. Rattlesden, 1621. There is no record of her marriage. She was alive in 1675.

  • v. Mary Kimball2, b. Rattlesden, Eng., 1625; m. Robert Dutch of Gloucester and Ipswich, Mass. Mary is wrongly given in many places as the wife of Deacon Thomas Knowlton, historians being misled by her fathers will, as he only mentions the first names of his daughters and does not leave anything to the children of Mary. But in an action for trespass against Richard Kimball, Sr., (in taking a heifer by his grandson Robert Dutch of the yard of Obadiah Wood and detaining the same Mar. 1662), this is shown to be wrong, Robert Dutch, Sr.'s wife was Mary. Savage's Dictionary is wrong in regard to her name. It says she was Mary Roper, daughter of Walter Roper. But Mary Roper was born in 1641. Mary Dutch says in a deposition that she is 36 in 1665, which would give her birth as 1629. Samuel Dutch calls Caleb Kimball2 uncle in deposition in 1664.

• By trade John Kimball2 was a wheelwright, but by occupation he seems, like his brothers, to have been also an extensive farmer. He frequently bought and sold land, and there are a number of deeds on record at Salem bearing his name. October 16, 1665, he was appointed one of the executors of the will of Bridget Bradstreet. In her will she mentions her oldest daughter, Martha Kimball. (This is evidently a clerical error, as Martha was the wife of William Beal.) She gives to her "the gound she now hath now in her possession, and my greine hood, a peuter dish, and Mr. Morton's Bocke and on sheet and on peliber (Pillowbear) To my daughter Mary Kemball my ould bible, my cloth waskate, my stamell peticote, on boulster and on palow, on peuter dish and on candlestick."
• John Kimball2 married Mary Bradstreet about 1655. He came over in the same ship with her and her father and mother. She was born in England in 1633. Most historians say that John married for his second wife Mary Jordan. This is an error. (See John3, Henry2, Richard1.) On March 8, 1673, he united with the church by taking the covenant. His will was made March 18, 1697-8. In it he mentions his sons Richard, John, and Mosis, to whom he gives sixe shillings a peece in money, which is all I intend to for them having by deed of gift giuene before what I them intended out of my estat. He mentions his sixe dafters Mary Sarah, hannah, Rebekah Elizabeth, and Abigail. His sunes Beniamin and Joseph kimbal have all the personal property divided between them, except one steer that he gives "to my sun beniamin, and my best cubbard I giue toe my sun beniamin's wife : in consideration of what they haue dune or may doe for me in my eage and weaknes." His real estate had all been given away before this time, and his personal property which was estimated at £131.9s.11d. consisted mainly of "Quick Stock" as follows Six Oxen £24. Eight cows £26. 13 young cattle £18.10s. 29 shepp £6. 12 swine £5.

• The name Kimball, now borne by so many families in this country, is undoubtedly a corruption, or variation of Kemball or Kemble, a common name in England. In the Watertown records it was almost uniformly written Kemball for several generations.
• Embarked at Ipswich, Eng., for N. Eng., Ap. 10, 1634, in the Elizabeth, William Andrews, Master, RICHARD KEMBALL, aged 39, with wife URSULA, and chil., 1. HENRY, aged 15. 2. ELIZABETH, aged 13. 3. RICHARD, aged 11. 4. MARY, aged 9. 5. MARTHA, aged 5. 6. JOHN, aged 3 ; and 7. THOMAS, aged 1 year. He settled first in Watertown, of which he was a proprietor, 1636-7, and was adm. freeman. May 6, 1635. He removed to Ipswich, probably in 1637, as in that year, Feb. 23, a house-lot was then granted to him. His son Richard was also a proprietor of Ipswich, in 1648. John was born in Rattlesden, county of Suffolk, England, in 1631, and came to America with his father. He settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts, and died there 6 May 1698.

In a deposition made in 1666 he says he is 35 years old. In a deposition made in 1684, when he was 53 years old, he and his nephew, Philip Fowler, testify "that Mary wife of Thomas patch, Abigail Bosworth (probably wife of Haniniel Bosworth, who Richard, Sr., calls cousin in his will), and Elizabeth Spofford were daughters of Thomas Scott, Sr." In 1656 he was appointed attorney for Thomas Scott of Stamford, Connecticut, son of Thomas Scott, Sr., late of Ipswich, and brother-in-law of his father, Richard Kimball, Sr. Thomas Scott's will was approved 8 Mar 1653-4, and mentions children Thomas, Elizabeth, Abigail, Hannah, Sarah, Mary and brother Richard Kimball. Thomas Scott, Jr., was in the Indian War, under Capt Lathrop, when he was killed at Squakehege (Northfield, Massachusetts) 8 Sept 1675.

By trade John was a wheelwright, but by occupation, he seems, like his brothers, to have been an extensive farmer. He frequently bought and sold land, and there are a number of deeds on record in Salem bearing his name. 16 Oct 1665, he was appointed one of the executors of the will of Bridget Bradstreet. In her will she mentions her oldest daughter, Martha Kimball. (This is evidently a clerical error, Martha was the wife of William Beal). She givers to her "the ground she hath now in her possession, and my greine hood, peuter dish, and Mr. Morton's Bocke and on sheet and on peliber (Pillowbear) To my daughter Mary Kemball my ould bible, my cloth waskate, my stamell peticote, on boulster and on palow, on peuter dish and on candlestick."

John married Mary Bradstreet about 1655. He came over on the same ship with her and her father and mother. She was born in England in 1633. Most historians say this John married for his second wife Mary Jordan. This is an error. (See John-3,Henry-2, Richard-1). On 8 Mar 1673, he united with the church by taking the covenant. His will is made 18 Mar 1697-8. In it he mentions his sons Richard, John and Mosis, to whom he gives "sixe shillings a peece in money, which is all i intend to for them having by deed of gift giuene before what I them intended out of my estat." He mentions his six "dafters Mary, Sarah, hannah, Rebekah Elizabeth and Abigail." His "sunes Beniaman and Jospeph kimbal" have all the personal property divided between them, except one steer that he gives "to my sun beiamin, and my best cubbard I gue toe my sun beniamin's wife: in consideration of what they have dune or may doe for em in my eage and weaknes."  	 Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts 	  Essex County, Massachusetts was created on May 10, 1643 by the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, when it ordered "that the whole plantation within this jurisdiction be divided into four sheires." The town of Ipswich was established on August 5, 1634, from common land called Agawam. On October 18, 1648, that portion called the "Village" at the New Meadows was set off as Topsfield. The boundary line between Ipswich and Topsfield was established, February 28, 1694.

Abigail Kimball Estey Poole was born on March 22, 1667. John Kimball, Jr. was born on March 16, 1668/69. Benjamin Kimball was born on July 22, 1670. Moses Kimball was born in September, 1672. Aaron Kimball was born in January 1673/4. Joseph Kimball was born on January 24, 1675.

On March 28, 1696 John Kimball, Sr. gave Moses the right to pasture three cows in the pasture of Richard Kimball that was his father John’s. He also gave him a house, orchard, and one acre of land on the road to Topsfield in consideration of his marriage to Susannah Goodhue.

On April 25, 1696 John Kimball, Sr. gave his son Benjamin a deed of the north end of his farm, with house, barn , and orchard bounding on Ipswich common and partly on the farm of his brother Joseph.

John and Mary both died in 1698. MaryRolandson Mary White Rowlandson,Talcot was captured by Native Americans during King Philip's War (1675-1676).

The ship Elizabeth sailed from Ipswich, England in April, 1634 with William Andrews, Master. On board were Richard and Ursula Kimball and their children, Ursula’s mother Martha Whatlock Scott and her brothers Roger and Thomas Scott. Humphrey and Bridget Bradstreet sailed on the same ship. They arrived in July at Boston. Old Style Calendar Before 1752 the year began on Lady Day, March 25th,. Dates between January 1st and March 24th were at the end of the year.
