About John Lambert, Sr.

Not the son of John Lambert & Abigail Ashby

Biography

John was born circa 1667, probably at Scituate, Plymouth Colony (Boston is the other option), the son of Thomas Lambert Sr. & Mary Unknown.

Other researchers have tried to make John a son of John Lambert & Abigail Hutchinson of Rowley, Essex, MA. However, there is no birth record for a son John to this couple & there are birth records for their two other children, Gershom & Abigail. (Vital Records of Rowley, MA, to the End of the Year 1849, page 126.) There is no known deed, court case or other primary source that connects these two families, one in Essex County, the other in Plymouth County. In fact, John Lambert & his brother Thomas Jr.'s relationship at Scituate, is confirmed by various deeds, where Thomas Jr.'s father in law, Josiah Holmes, is a witness. (Plymouth County Deeds, vol. 12, pgs. 217 & 218.) John also names a daughter, Susannah, presumably after John & Thomas Jr.'s sister.

He is mentioned in Deane's History of Scituate, pg. 302, as coming from Hingham. This is probably where he met his wife, Hannah "Anna" Bates. They were married circa 1693.

In an early deed & court case, he is described as yeoman, but in two later deeds he is described as a blacksmith. He was never described as a fisherman. (Plymouth County Court Records, 1686-1859, Vol. 5, pg. 201; Plymouth County Deeds, Vols. 30, 40 & 41, pgs. 198, 77 & 203.)

The following children are recorded at in Scituate town records: (Town Records of Scituate, MA, Vol. 6, pg. 73.)

  1. John Lambert Jr. (12/5/1693 - 3/8/1770, at Hanover, MA).
  2. Mary Lambert (4/20/1695)
  3. Hannah Lambert Bowker (4/10/1697 - aft. 10/12/1767, prob. at Scituate.)
  4. Susannah Lambert Stowell (6/1/1699).

The following children are presumed, but there are no birth records:

  1. James Lambert (circa 1701). No known connection.
  2. Isaac Lambert (circa 1703). (Found in the same church John & Hannah attended, Congregational Church of Hanover.)
  3. Anna Lambert Humphrey (circa 1705 - aft. 10/18/1771). No known connection.
  4. Uriah Lambert (circa 1708 - 8/28/1800, at Windsor, Berkshire, MA) (Deed from Scituate, vol. 30, page 198, proves relationship.).

John's death is recorded in the First Congregational Church records, where it states he died January 1, 1752[53]. He could not have died in 1752, as he is involved in a deed in April, 1752 record at Scituate, volume 41, page 202.

NB His wife, Hannah Bates, has been confused with Hannah Holmes, the wife of John's brother, Thomas Lambert Jr. Multiple deeds show that she could not have been Hannah Holmes, & that John Lambert was living next to & involved with multiple deeds with the Bates family in Scituate.
