Pa Geneal Mag: "John McKnitt maternal grandfather of John McKnitt Alexander who was secretary of the Mecklenburg Convention of 1775, settled in Somerset county, Md probably in 1684. He was accompanied by his first wife Jane, whom he had doubtless married in Northern Ireland a short time before sailing for America. Although her surname is not of record, I believe that she was an Alexander, probably sister to Samuel Alexander with whom John McKnitt was intimately associated in both Somerset and Cecil Counties.

It is uncertain when the the McKnitts landed at Philadelphia or New Castle-on-Delaware or at one of the eastern shore Virginia ports of entry. What we do know is that they did not remain there, but located instead on the west side of the Pocomoke River on a track called The Strand which, originally consisted of 1,000 acres, had been surveyed 7 March 1663 for Daniel Jenifer but patented in the name of Capt Thomas Smith.

At the time of John McKnitt's acquisition of his 88 acres thereof, the other owners were Thomas Carroll's orphans,100 acres; Mark Gendron, 200 acres: Walter Lane, 200 acres: Thomas Layfield, 112 acres: and James Arkinson,100 acres.(Rent Rools) The Strand was in the Manokin neighborhood in which the Alexanders, Browns, Kings, Polks, Strawbridges and Walllices resided. (Old Somerset pg 13, 232, 271, 364-5, 430, 468.) There he continued to live about 15 years during all of which time the Reverend Thomas Wilson was pastor of the Manokin Presbyterian Congregation.

To John and Jane McKnitt four children were born, their births being recorded in Somerset Court Liber IKL (ProbMd IKL)"

PA Geneal Mag: "After the accession of William and Mary to the Throne there was circulated among the citizens of Somerset County an Address of Loyalty, bearing date of 28 Nov 1689 Among the more than 200 Signers were John McKnitt, William Alexander Sr.and Jr., William Polk, John Steel, Robert Polk, to mention a few.( Maryland Archives VIII pg 139-142)"

Tenn Cousins Worthy S. Ray in his Tennessee Cousin's stated that John McKnitt and his wife Jane Wallace had the 6 children including Abigail Mcknitt who married James Alexander after the death of Margaret her sister.

Married Jane Alexander in Northern Ireland in 1682 before sailing for America. One of the first ministers of the old Gillihed Church in the Beattie's Ford Section of Mecklenburg Co. Purchased the Strand, 88 acres in the Manokin neighborhood in which the Alexanders, Polks, and Wallaces resided.

In Somerset Co.on 28 November 1689 Signed Address of Loyalty to William and Mary on their accession to the Throne.

Brevard Family C: "Rev James and family settled 1707 in "The Woods" between the branches of the Elk River. His 90 Acre plantation Glasgow adjoined Bullen's Range; a tract laid out for Samuel Alexander (son of Rev James Alexander and Mary Maxwell) called "Sligo:" "High Spaniola" (Hispaniola) covering 900 acres in which both John McKnitt Sr. and John McKnitt jr. had an interest and John/Jean Brevard's " Charles Camp." All were adjoining and all were located within a mile of the western terminus of the present Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, where Back Creek flowed into what is now the canal, and all within a mile of Maryland/Delaware boundary. None of these "Plantations" were in the New Munster tract at the extreme northern end of Cecil County, where Herdon erroneously places them.

Mary, fourth child of John and Jane McKnitt, was born, as already noted, 26 February 1691/2. Sometime within a year thereafter the mother died, for on 28 March 1693 John McKnitt married Jane Wallis (Wallace). 5 The officiating clergyman, whose name seems to have been incorrectly entered as "Mr. Burnett, minister of ye Gospel" (for Burnett is a name unknown in early Presbyterian or Church of England records), may well have been Reverend Thomas Barret who, in 1685, had been in correspondence with Reverend Francis Makemie, then in Somerset, concerning his Barret's moving to New England from his then location on the Ashley River, South Carolina. 6 VIII Archives of MaryIand 139-142.

"Thirty-five years before these first McNitts arrived, however, John McKnitt of Ulster Province settled on a 1,000 acre tract called the Strand in Somerset County, Maryland. Two sons, ROBERT (b 1685) and JOHN (b 1687) were born there. John later moved to Cecil County, Maryland and son John McKnitt II acquired the Strand. Other descendants included John McKnitt III and John McKnitt IV who, according to Cecil County records, amended his name to - John McKnight!

In 'The MacNauchtan Saga,' V.V. McNitt speculates that members of the Maryland McKnitt family may have removed to the Carolinas and other places in the South, where the surname McKnight is often encountered. There is no evidence that any of these McKnitts/McKnights changed their name to McNitt in the Colonies -- although, they did use a remarkable total of 18 surname variants. Still, the Ulster-Scot 'McKnitts' and 'McNitts' doubtless share a common ancestor, probably named McKnight or MacKnight, who lived in Galloway 500 or 600 years ago."

Fourth child of John Mcknitt and Jane was born in 1691/2 her mother died within a year for her father married Jane Wallis (Wallace) on 28 Mar 1693" Mary, fourth child of John and Jane McKnitt, was born, as already noted, 26 February 1691/2. Sometime within a year thereafter the mother died, for on 28 March 1693 John McKnitt married Jane Wallis (Wallace). 5 The officiating clergyman, whose name seems to have been incorrectly entered as "Mr. Burnett, minister of ye Gospel" (for Bur-nett is a name unknown in early Presbyterian or Church of England records), may well have been Reverend Thomas Barret who, in 1685, had been in correspondence with Reverend Francis Makemie, then in Somer- set, concerning his Barret's moving to New England from his then loca- tion on the Ashley River, South Carolina. 6 VIII Archives of MaryIand 139-142. 5 Somerset Court Liber IKL, 173. 6 Old Somerset, 535.
