============================================

John Overmyer (aka John of Pickaway) was probably born in Northumberland Co., PA. Previously, he was thought to be the son of John Peter Obermeier, but recent research confirms that he was, in fact, the son of George III and Mary (Rearick) Overmire.

It has been reported that cemetery records show he was born Jan. 25, 1781 and died Jun. 8, 1858. This has been confirmed by the dates shown in the photograph of his tombstone (courtesy of RoxAnne Sweany), which spells the last name "Overmyer."

John married Marie Barbara Gensel. He served in the War of 1812 under Gen. William Henry "Old Tippecanoe" Harrison, who later became President of the United States.

For more on John of Pickaway and the research that ties him to George III, see the book "One Immigrant's Legacy, the Overmyer Family in America, 1751-2009" by Laurence Overmire. Available from Indelible Mark Publishing, www.imarkbooks.com

A BIOGRAPHY OF JOHN OBERMIER, by Larry Overmire, Aug. 2008:

There is quite a bit of mystery regarding this John Obermier, son of Peter Obermeier and Mary Eva Hennig.
It can safely be assumed that he came with his parents to Ohio about the age of 13. According to his tombstone, he died at the age of 25. He was buried in the New Reading Cemetery between his parents Peter and Eva, yet no mention of him is made in the 1905 Overmyer genealogy, which apparently confused him with John of Pickaway, son of George and Mary Rearick Overmire. Circumstantial evidence suggests John may be the mysterious Overmire husband of Susannah Hoffman who married Peter Primmer.
He may also be the "Sergt. John Overmire" who served in Capt. Adam Binkley's Company (from Perry and Fairfield Counties) from Jun 1 - Aug 12, 1813 in the War of 1812.
