Probably son of either James Patterson or Alexander Patterson, both of whom appear on the 1820 census in Indiana Township, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Perhaps a descendant of Galbraith Patterson (1764-1800).

A Duncan Galbraith, born 1763, died Dec. 29, 1844, is buried in the same Greenwood Cemetery at Sharpsburg.
Deer Township, created in 1796, comprised Allegheny county north of the Ohio and Allegheny Rivers, including all of modern Indiana, O'Hara, Harmar, Springdale, Fawn, Harrison, and East and West Deer, and portions of Shaler, Hampton, and Richmond. Settlers by 1803 included Duncan Galbraith and Alexander Patterson. Settlers by 1805 included William Galbraith.

John Patterson was born in Indiana Township according to Greenwood interment records.
At that time, there were 2 Patterson families in the area [Indiana Township] headed by Alexander Patterson and James Patterson.
Census records indicate that both households had young sons in the home in 1820.
In 1850 John was married and working as a riverboat pilot while he and his wife and young daughter Martha Matilda lived in McKeesport.
In 1860 they lived in Elizabeth Township with 5 children and he was still a pilot.
In 1870 they were in Lincoln Township with 8 children and he is listed as a laborer.
He was buried in the Sharpsburg Presbyterian graveyard at age 60 when he died of typhoid fever. His remains were moved to Greenwood on April 21, 1880.
