About John David York, Sr.
- Updated from MyHeritage Family Trees via brother Thomas York by SmartCopy: Jan 31 2015, 8:10:47 UTC
John York, Sr. is the proposed first born son of Jeremiah York I and his first wife Sarah Seymour in Olney, Buckinghamshire England. Perhaps he was named after his grandfather John Seymour. It is a proposed scenario that John York, Sr. was born about 1708 in England. It is proposed that John York, Sr. when he was 9 or 10 years old migrated to America with his father Jeremiah York in 1717/1718. Although not documented it is believed John had just lost his mother Sarah Seymour in about 1715 at the birth of his brother Richard York in England. This may have left the young John York, Sr. to be raised by his father Jeremiah and later by his new wife Sarah Ann Wilson, his step-mother, as part of the Jeremiah York I family.
It is a proposed undocumented scenario that John York, Sr. age about 18 met a young lady named Elizabeth and married her about 1726 in West Nottingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth York “marries out of unity” in 1826 per the Quaker Minutes for New Garden MM, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Most likely this occurred shortly after John first lived with his father Jeremiah and then with his new step mother Sarah Ann Wilson. It is suggested John York, Sr. was not listed in the Tax list; not being old enough to buy land. It is believed that John York, Sr. and his new wife had only one child John York, Jr born about 1731 in West Nottingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania living with his parents. It is suggested John York's wife Elizabeth died from complications at child birth, leaving little John York, Jr as an orphan. However it is possible she gave John York, Sr. additional children that we have been unable to identify.
This proposed scenario is based upon the the 1755 Orange County, North Carolina Tax List that identifies "John York and son" as Taxable Land Owners age 21. Therefore, the math suggests the elder John York, Sr. must be about age 44 in 1755 or born about at least by 1711 or earlier in 1708. Furthermore for the father John York. Sr to have a son John (David) York, Sr. as an eligible land owner of at least 21 suggests his son was born about 1755-21=1734 or earlier perhaps in 1726.
Note: This scenario provides for a John York, Sr. (1708 -ca1781) who listed his taxes in 1755 in colonial Orange County, North Carolina and a son John (David) York, Jr. (1726 - 1792) who was also was listed in 1755 with his father John York, Sr. (1708-ca1781). John York and son are also listed on the first 1779 Tax List for the creation of Randolph County.
