About Joseph Bassett

Joseph Bassett, son of William and Elizabeth Bassett, was born in 1635. Joseph settled in Bridgewater and died there in 1712. He married (1) Mary Lapham, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Tilden) Lapham, in 1658. (Joseph's mother-in-law, Mary (Tilden) Lapham, later married his father, William Bassett.) Mary was born around 1641 in Scituate, Massachusetts. She died in 1676 in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

Joseph married (2) Martha Hobart on 16 Oct of 1677. She was the daughter of Edmund Hobart of Hingham. After Joseph's death, his widow moved to Norton, where her sons were living, and died there 14 Mar 1717.

Joseph was constable of Bridgewater in 1669, selectman in 1670, and surveyor of highways in 1670, 1671, 1674, 1679, and 1680. He was a blacksmith like his father and brothers.
