Biography

The date and place of birth of Mary Langton are unknown. Her mother, Mary Mathew, originally of Colchester, Essex, was unmarried in October 1534[1] and she married firstly (unknown) Wollaye and had a son Emanuell. Mary Langton's father, Thomas Langton, born in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire[2], was Mary Mathew's second husband. It is presumed that Mary Langton was born in the late 1530s or early 1540s.

In 1542, Mary Langton, daughter of Thomas Langton was noted in the will of her grandfather, John Langton, a merchant who had been Mayor of Kingston upon Hull in 1521[3].

In the will of her father, Thomas Langton, a Citizen and Skinner of the City of London, the will made on 28 Jun 1550 and proved on 25 Feb 1551[2], Mary Langton was listed first of his four daughters and she was bequeathed £500. Her sisters were Jane, Anne and Elizabeth. She also had a brother, Thomas.

Mary Langton married Sir William Winter[4] of Gloucestershire, England. Their first daughter, named Mary, was born about 1558, indicating they may have married around 1557.

Comments

The History of Parliament Biography for Sir William Wynter[10] indicates that the Mary Langton who married Sir William Winter was the daughter of Thomas Langton of Gloucestershire. However, no evidence has been identified which links this Thomas Langton with Gloucestershire other than his daughter Mary the wife of Sir William Winter of Gloucestershire.

In the Wynter Pedigree in the Visitation of Gloucester[5] Mary Langton was recorded as the daughter and heir of Thomas Langton and 'Catherine' Mathewe
