Lt. John Hoyle fought in the Revolutionary War with Col. Frederick Hambright and his son, Major Frederick Hambright. It was the consensus of opinion among the older people that Lt. John Hoyl was on the northern side of King's Mountain Oct. 7, 1780, in the battle of King's Mountain. For this service, John Hoyl received 1150 acres of land on Knob Creek in Rutherford Co., near Cleveland Co. He and Margaret were the parents of 13 children: Peter III, Mary, Margaret, Andrew II, Elizabeth, John II, Susannah, Jacob, Adam, David I, Frances, Solomon, and Sarah. He is buried in the old Grace German Church Cemetery near Newton, NC.
