About Lillie Weidenthal

Lillie Weidenthal Passes Away

Miss Lillie Weidenthal, 10834 Deering Avenue, passed away at her home on Sunday, Nov. 28. A member of a pioneer Cleveland Jewish family, Miss Weidenthal was a teacher in the Cleveland Public Schools for 36 years. Her grandmother, Rebecca Weidenthal arrived in Cleveland in 1849, traveling from the southern part of Ohio on the old Ohio Canal. Miss Weidenthal's parents, Emanuel and Julie Weidenthal came to Cleveland to make their home shortly after the Civil War. She was one of eleven children. Miss Weidenthal was born on Superior Avenue, west of Public Square. She attended Rockwell School, Central High School and the Cleveland Normal School and following her graduation, served on the faculties of Rockwell School and old Central School now known as John Burroughs School. In 1929, she retired.

All of her adult brothers were newspaper men. The eldest, the late Maurice, a drama critic and political writer for The Cleveland Press, founded and became the first editor of The Jewish Independent in 1906. The late Henry was news editor of the Cleveland News for many years. Leo, who had been on the staffs of the old Cleveland World, the Cleveland Leader and the Plain Dealer, became editor of The Jewish Independent in 1917 following the death of his brother.* Three of Miss Weidenthal's sisters taught in the elementary schools of Cleveland.

Miss Weidenthal was a member of the Temple and Hadassah. Surviving her are her brother, Leo and a sister, Mrs. Evelyn Sperling.

Funeral services were conducted on Nov. 30, Rabbi Earl Stone officiating. Interment was at Mayfield Cemetery. Pallbearers were Edward A. Kline, David Sperling, Dan Klein, Bud Weidenthal, William Sperling and James Newman, all nephews of the deceased.
