About Louis Leonard
LOUIS LEONARD (otherwise LOUIS LAYNARD or LOUIS LENARD)
Louis Leonard was a farmer. He is the second son of John Leonard, farmer and former Hudson's Bay Company servant. His mother is Marguerite Sllortssa. His death registration certificate confirms that he is the son of John Leonard and Marguerite, and that his father was Scottish [British Columbia Death Registrations] The Canadian Census of 1911 suggests that he was born in January 1868.
Childhood
Following the accidental drowning of his father, Louis Leonard and his brothers, John and Joe: were brought up in the Kamloops Band as Indians and continued to make their lives with the Band as Shuswap [Jean Barman, Sojourning Sisters: The Lives And Letters Of Jessie And Annie McQueen (University of Toronto Press Incorporated, 2003), page 136]. His death registration certificate confirms that he and his mother were both born at the Kamloops Indian Reserve [British Columbia Death Registrations]
1881 Census
1
When the Canadian Federal Census was enumerated on 4 April 1881, Louis Leonard and his brothers, John and Joe, are noticed in the household of Jéróme Hiheilist. Louis is classified as "indigenous" and is said to have been born in British Columbia. He was 16 years of age at this time, and, if this is accurate, then he was probably born during the twelve month period which began on 5 April 1864 and ended on 4 April 1865. Louis and John are noticed twice in this census return, although it is not yet clear why. [ttps://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MV6S-VXJ Canada Census, 1881" index, FamilySearch]
