Notes

Families of Early Milford, Connecticut – Susan Emma Woodruff Abbott, page 9

Son of Gideon Allen and Sarah Prudden. Born before 1693 when his mother died and after 1685 when his older sister Hannah was born.

Was a medical doctor. Married Ann Burr, daughter of Nathaniel of Stamford in 1748.

But the records for Gideon Allen, b. 1671, show that the profile of Gideon by Abbott has numerous errors, possibly because Abbott did not have access to the records outside Milford.

Gideon Allen of Gideon & Sarah born, Boston, Aug 9 1671 (A report of the Record Commissioners containing Boston births, baptisms, marriages, and deaths, 1630-1699. Rockwell and Churchill, City Printers, Boston, 1888, p. 117); Baptism of Gideon son of Gideon Allen, Oct 8 1671 (Old South Church, Boston, transcripts, b) Family History Library, film 0856694, item 5, baptisms, 1669-1875, p. 6).

Gideon Allen, b. 1671, was first mentioned in 1699 in Fairfield: Gideon Allen purchased of Robert Lord[?] by bill of sale May 8 1699, parcel of meadow fresh & salt, 4 acres, in Fairfield in the Great Meadow common so called (Fairfield, Fairfield Co., CT, Land records, Family History Library, film 0004273, item 1, v. A or 1, 1649-1694, part 2, p. 408).

Gideon Allen m. 1) at Fairfield 20 Jan 1696 Anna Burr dau. of Nathaniel, she d. at Fairfield 14 Mar 1747/8 age 72, he m. 2) 10 Aug 1749 Jane wid. of Moses Dimon & formerly wid. of John Hill, d. at Reading 22 Jul 1774 age 98 (Jacobus, Donald Lines, 1930-2, History and genealogy of the families of old Fairfield [CT]. The Eunice Dennie Burr Chapter, D.A.R., Fairfield CT, 3 vols. [Reprint, 1976, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore MD], v. 1, p. 14-15).

Gideon Allen was an important citizen of Fairfield, and there are dozens of records for him. He was listed as simply Gideon Allen of Fairfield, Gideon Allen of Fairfield cordwainer, Mr. Gideon Allen, Sargeant Gideon Allen, Ensign Gideon Allen, Lieutenant Gideon Allen, or Gideon Allen Sr. The only record that called him "Dr. Gideon Allen" is Abbott. It was Gideon's son, John Allen, who was the doctor in the family.

Gideon was one of the group that bought land near Danbury, CT, Oct 1707, later named New Fairfield: Upon the petition of Capt. Nathan Gold, Mr. Peter Burr, Capt. John Wakeman, John Edwards, Jonathan Sturgis, John Barlow, Gideon Allin, Samuel Wilson, Samuel Jinings, Moses Dimon, and Joseph Wakeman, all inhabitants of Fairfield, in behalf of themselves and their associates, for a certain tract of land to be for a township, lying north of and near to Danbury, bounded southerly upon Danbury, running thence northerly fourteen miles; bounding easterly upon Newmilford, westerly upon the colonie line: This Court grants to them the said petitioners and their associates, their heirs and assigns forever, the abovesaid tract of land for a township, provided it doth not prejudice any former grants; to be under such regulations for the settlement thereof and the number of inhabitants as this Court shall judge fit (The Public Records of the Colony of Connecticut: v. 5, from October, 1706, to October, 1716, Hoadly, Charles J., 1870, p. 34). Gideon granted much of his land in New Fairfield to his children, and it appears that he never resided there.

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wayland/fowler/pafg106.htm has some good references and discussion about Gideon the father and Gideon the son. He may have been the eldest child, in which case Abbott is wrong about his order of birth and his marriage being in 1748.
